Furman wins Palmetto Intercollegiate

KIAWAH ISLAND, S.C. – Furman (+11) closed out the 2015 fall season Tuesday with a win at the Palmetto Intercollegiate at the par-72, 5,972-yard Turtle Point Golf Course. The victory marks the Paladins’ second straight win after taking the title at the Yale Intercollegiate.

The Paladins posted a final-round 298 and held off a surge by second-place Chattanooga (+18) to capture the title. Campbell was third (+20), while Augusta (+22) and Illinois (+23) completed the top five.  No. 23 Louisville (+25) finished sixth.

Freshman Haylee Harford (+1) tied for third to lead the Paladins, notching a 78 with a birdie on No. 13 on Tuesday. Senior Valentina Romero (+5) and junior Taylor Totland (+5) tied for 16th. Totland carded a team-best 72 with a birdie on No. 2 in the final round, while Romero birdied No. 6 and No. 18 for a 75. Sophomore Jacqueline Bendrick (+11) birdied the par-3 No. 4 to tally a 75 and tie for 38th, and sophomore Alice Chen (+15) led the Paladins with three birdies in the final round, scoring a 76 to place 61st.

Furman will open the 2016 spring season at the Florida State Match Up in Tallahassee, Fla., Feb. 12-14.

 

Chattanooga finishes second at Palmetto Intercollegiate

KIAWAH ISLAND, S.C. – Chattanooga finished second at the Palmetto Intercollegiate on Tuesday. The runner-up finish is the fourth top-three in five events for the program. The Mocs fired 882 over the 54 holes to finish seven shots behind Furman.

The Mocs topped Campbell in third by two, Augusta by four, Illinois five and No. 23 Louisville by seven.

Monica San Juan led the final-round charge as the team shot 292. Her 3-under 69 was nearly matched by Emily McLennan’s 70. Cris Perez shot 76, while Megan Woods and Isabella Loza each carded 77.

McLennan’s 1-over 217 tied for third overall. Four strokes behind medalist Chayanid Prapassarangkul of Kansas at -3. It’s McLennan’s third top-10 and second top-five of the fall.

San Juan missed the top 10 by one shot. She tied for 11th at 219 (+3). Woods and Perez notched top-25s, tying for 23rd at 223 (+7).

The Mocs are off until February. They return to the tee Feb. 22-23 at the USA Women’s Invitational in Mobile, Ala.

 

ETSU finishes 11th at Palmetto Intercollegiate

KIAWAH ISLAND, S.C. – Hee Ying Loy led the ETSU women’s golf team at the Palmetto Intercollegiate as the Buccaneer freshman finished in sixth place at 2-over-par 218 (70-77-71) on Tuesday from Turtle Point Golf Course.

Loy finished strong in the final round. On her last day, she carded four birdies and 11 pars en route to shooting 1-under 71 and was tied for third individually with the most birdies (9) in the 54-hole tournament.

The Buccaneers recorded their lowest round of the tournament on the final day as the Blue and Gold shot an 8-over-par 296 and placed 11th with a three-round score of 38-over-par 902 (301-305-296).

Vivienne Chin, Linda Dobele, and Dominika Czudkova each finished the third round with a 3-over-par 75. Czudkova started on hole 10 and scored 11 straight pars, and Dobele carded two birdies on back-to-back par-3 holes.

Both Chin and Dobele placed in the top 30 after scoring 8-over-par 224 and a 9-over-par 225, respectively. Chin was in the top four players with one of the lowest scores on par-3 holes with a 1-under score.

Rachel Pollock improved by three strokes on her final day in Kiawah Island as she finished with a 6-over-par 78. Pollock totaled 13 pars in the last 18 holes, which was her best in the three-day tournament.

ETSU finished just one stroke from breaking into the top 10 in the tournament. South Florida made the biggest improvement in the final round as it moved up five spots to finish in 12th. No. 40 Furman held onto the top spot with 11-over 875 (288-289-298), and No. 23 Louisville finished in sixth with a 4-over-par 889.

Yupaporn Kawinpakorn of Kansas finished first individually after firing a 3-under-par 213. Kawinpakorn was the only player who finished below par in the three-day contest.

This tournament was the final match of the fall schedule for the Buccaneers. ETSU returns to action in late February at the Edwin Watts/Kiawah Island Classic in Kiawah Island, S.C., to kick off the spring 2016 schedule.
