SPARTANBURG, S.C. – Tanner Hinkle of Furman and Karisa Nelson of Samford have been named Southern Conference men’s and women’s runners of the week, respectively, for competition that took place Oct. 16-17, the league office announced on Wednesday.
Hinkle paced the Paladin men at the Wisconsin Invitational, which featured 17 ranked teams. The junior from Mason, Mich., clocked a time of 24:04.6 on the 8K course to finish 35th individually at the meet. As a team, the Paladins scored 310 points for sixth place overall. This is Hinkle’s third runner of the week award this year and the fourth of his career.
On the women’s side, Nelson led the Samford women at the Crimson Classic in Tuscaloosa, Ala. The sophomore from Brewton, Ala., posted a 17:45.15 on the 5K course, which was good for a 26th-place finish individually. She improved on her time of 18:26.90 from a year ago at the same meet and placed 27 spots higher than last year. This is Nelson’s first runner of the week honor.
All 10 teams will conclude the season at the SoCon Championship in Greenville, S.C., on Saturday, Oct. 31. The meet will be held on the campus of Furman University.
