Bulldogs compete at College of Charleston Invitational

ROCK HILL, S.C. – The Citadel men's and women's cross country teams finished third and seventh, respectively, in the College of Charleston Classic on Friday afternoon.

Michael Lantz led the way for the men's team, finishing the 8k fourth overall in 26:34.3. The sophomore was followed closely by Jamie Cunningham who crossed the finish line just 20 seconds later, 26:54.4. Matthew Gill crossed the finish line in 13th place and clocked a time of 27:14.4, and Grant Smith finished the course in 28:04.1 to take 29th place overall. Charles Braddock rounded out the top-five runners for the Bulldogs, clocking a time of 28:18.0.

For the women's team, Emani Little recorded the fastest time in the 5k for The Citadel crossing the finish line in 19:24.3. Bethany Reeves was the next Bulldog to finish, recording a time of 20:07.7. Grace Jenkins (20:11.6) and Jessica DeWitte (20:33.2) finished in 35th and 44th place, respectively. Elizabeth Webster was the fifth Bulldog to finish, clocking a time of 21:04.3.

The Citadel will return to action on Oct. 31 when they head to Greenville, South Carolina, for the SoCon Championships at 10 a.m. 

 

ETSU men finish seventh, women ninth at Wake Forest Invite

KERNERSVILLE, N.C. – On Friday afternoon the ETSU cross country program competed at the Wake Forest Invitational with the men finishing seventh and the women finishing ninth.

In the men's 8k race, the Bucs finished seventh out of 18 teams with sophomore David "Skyler" Winchester pacing ETSU for the first time this season with a time of 25:36.48. Winchester placed 25th out of nearly 170 runners. Coming in second for the Blue & Gold was freshman James Garst with a time of 25:59.90, placing 45th. A second behind Garst was junior Simeon Roberts who placed 46th with a time of 26:00.58.

Rounding out the top five for the Bucs was sophomore Carl Oberfeitinger and sophomore Hayden Borghetti-Metz.

George Mason won the men's race, just edging out Charlotte with an overall total score of 68. ETSU was right behind their Southern Confernece counterparts as Furman placed fifth while VMI placed sixth.

On the women's side ETSU was paced junior Emily Williams who ran a time of 22:42.01, placing 30th overall out of 170 runners. Sneaking into the top 50 was junior Victoria Hutchens who came in 37th with a time of 22:51.02. Hutchens has paced the Bucs the last two events.

Rounding out the top five for the Buccaneer women's cross country team was sophomore Macy Carrier, breaking the top 100 with a time of 24:01. After Carrier was junior Sahara Fletcher and sophomore Sarah Zimmer.

The women finished ninth out of 17 teams and was the highest placed SoCon team finishing ahead of VMI in 14th placed. Richmond won the event with an overall score of 53.

It was the final tune-up for the Bucs before heading to Greenville, S.C. on Oct. 31 for the Southern Conference Champions hosted by Furman University.

 

Furman men’s cross country finishes sixth at Wisconsin, fifth at Wake Forest

GREENVILLE, S.C. – The 24th-ranked Furman men's cross country team placed sixth at the Wisconsin Invitational in Madison, Wis., and fifth at the Wake Forest Invitational in Kernersville, N.C., on Friday.

The Paladins scored 310 points for sixth place in the championship race of the Wisconsin Invitational, which featured 17 ranked teams, including seven top-11 teams.  Syracuse won the meet with 101 points, followed by BYU with 186 points, and Michigan with 218 points.

Junior Tanner Hinkle paced the Paladins on the 8K course, finishing 35th with a time of 24:04.6, followed by junior Troy Reeder in 36th place at 24:04.9.  Sophomore Frank Lara crossed the line in 24:14.7 for 57th place, while fellow sophomore Aaron Templeton was 70th with a time of 24:17.3.  Sophomore Josh Brickell completed the Paladin slate of scorers, taking 112th place at 24:30.7.  Sophomore Austin Sprague placed 136th with a time of 24:38.5, and sophomore Mark Hadley posted a time of 24:50.4 for 163rd place. 

Furman scored 135 points to take fifth place at Wake Forest.  Junior Lee Shearer led the team with a tenth-place finish after posting a time of 25:19.62 on the 8K course, while junior Kyle Polman was 12th after crossing the line in 25:20.89.  Sophomore Matt Lange finished 20th with a time of 25:30.74, and sophomore Quintin McKinnish placed 69th with a time of 26:34.38.  Senior Jack Miller notched a time of 26:46.50 for 80th place, and sophomore Hayden Cox turned in a time of 28:24.30 for 133rd place.

The Paladin women's team will run at the Pre-NCAA Invitational in Louisville, Ky., on Saturday.

 

Nelson and Guillorel lead Samford at Crimson Classic

TUSCALOOSA, Ala. – The Samford University cross country program returned to competition on Friday at the Crimson Classic hosted by the University of Alabama on the Harry Pritchett Course.

Sophomore Arsène Guillorel raced his way to a fourth-place finish and improved on last year's mark by more than a minute. Guillorel paced the Bulldogs with a time of 24:24.02 and was the second fastest time out of competitors from the South Region. Antibahs Kosgei from Alabama edged out Guillorel with a time of 24:17.47.

The men tallied 336 points to place 13th overall in the field with an average time of 26:00.24 in the 8k event.

On the women's side, it was Karisa Nelson who paced the team with a 26th place finish time of 17:45.15. Nelson improved on her time of 18:26.90 from a year ago and placed 27 spots higher than last year.

The women finished with an overall 21st place result of 522 points with an average time of 19:28.57.

The Bulldogs next meet will be the Southern Conference Cross Country Championships which will be held in Greenville, S.C.

 

King’s PR Leads VMI women at Wake Forest; men finish sixth at Wake Forest Invite

KERNERSVILLE, N.C. – Bethany King led the way for the VMI women's cross country team by finishing with a personal best effort at the Wake Forest Invitational, contested Friday at the Ivey M. Redmon Sports Complex in Kernersville, N.C. The VMI men's cross country team finished sixth place at the meet.

On the women’s side, King crossed the line on the 6K course in 23:32, good for 69th place overall and a 26-second personal best. Kennedy Flynn was once again VMI's #2 runner, finishing 106th in 24:33.

VMI, who ran just five runners due to illness, finished 14th in the team standings with 404 points. Richmond bested Appalachian State and the host Demon Deacons to win the meet.

Mia Castelveter was the Keydets' No. 3 runner, finishing with a personal best of 25:53. That was good for 136th place. Christina Hill (26:15/143rd) and Riley Neary (28:03/153rd) rounded out the VMI finishers.

On the men’s side, Sean Helmke led the way for VMI for the second consecutive meet, as he finished 26th on the 8K course in 25:37. Daniel DeNijs was 34th in 25:48, and for the first time, true freshman Kyle Sabourin moved into VMI's top three spots with a 47th-place finish (26:02). Brandon White (49th/26:05) and Patrick Spahn (50th/26:05) wrapped up the Keydets' top five finishers.

In the team standings, VMI finished sixth overall, 46 points ahead of seventh-place ETSU. George Mason beat Charlotte to win the meet.

VMI cross country will return to action for the Southern Conference Championships on October 31 in Greenville, S.C.

 

Catamount men and women finish second at CofC Classic

ROCK HILL, S.C. – The Western Carolina men's and women's cross country teams both took second at the College of Charleston Classic Friday evening. The event was moved to Winthrop University after weather made two separate courses in the Charleston area unusable. Men's freshman runner Liam Brooks took the overall spot in the 8K race as he bested all his competition by completed the course in 25:54.5. On the women's side it was freshman Kaitlyn Lingard leading the way as she finished second overall with a time of 18:41.7 on the 5K course.

College of Charleston took top honors in both team events. The Catamount men finished just four points behind the Cougars as all five Catamount scorers finished in the overall top-19. The women did not come as close as they fell by 39 points to the Cougars despite having all five scorers within the top-21.

Junior JC Cornett picked up a top-five finish for the men as he placed fifth overall after crossing the line in 26:40.5. WCU's third finisher was freshman Jordan Bostian who clocked a time of 27:08.6 which placed him 12th.

The men defeated fellow Southern Conference members The Citadel (3rd) and Wofford (4th).

Coming across second for the women was freshman Emma Hand who placed ninth overall with a time of 19:18.7. Sophomore Madison Goode was next in line after stopping the clock at 19:26.2 which earned her 12th in the race.

The women also defeated Wofford (sixth) and The Citadel (seventh) in route to their second place finish.

Rounding out the men's scorers were freshmen Caleb Albrecht and Jordan Kokoska. Albrecht stopped the clock at 27:16.3 which placed him 15th while Kokoska came across 19th with a time of 27:27.2.

The women's final two scorers were senior Kaitlyn Shetler and freshman Jada Blake. Shetler finished 16th overall with a time of 19:41.7 while Blake crossed the line in 21st after clocking in at 19:45.8. Freshman Trinity Wiles just missed out on the scoring five as she came in one second behind Blake at 19:46.8.

The Catamounts will now turn their attention to the 2015 Southern Conference Championships on Saturday, Oct. 31. The event will be held at Furman University.

 

Wofford competes at College of Charleston Classic

ROCK HILL, S.C. – The Wofford College men’s and women’s cross country teams ran at the College of Charleston Classic Invitational on Friday afternoon at the Winthrop University Farm Course. The men placed fourth behind a sixth place finish by Alex Michaels, while the women were sixth overall.

The women’s 5K event began the competition. Anya Bunao was the first Terrier to cross the finish line with a time of 19:31.4 to place 13th overall. She was followed by Alexandra Forster (19:44.1), Rebeka Fadgyas (20:29.6), Breck Peterson (20:32.8), and Halee Rogers (20:55.2) to score for the Terriers. Also competing were Jamie Barnett, Rebeka Parent, and Jamie Washburn.

Alex Michaels was the top finisher for Wofford in the men’s 8K race with a time of 26:50.7 to place sixth overall. Cisco Ferre was close behind at 26:54.4 in eighth place. Cristian Widenhouse (27:30.0), Joe Harbacevich (27:31.7), and Jonathan Rice (28:18.0) also scored for the Terriers. Ryan Doyle, Dane Szalwinski, and Ben Boatwright rounded out the finishers for Wofford. 

College of Charleston won the men’s race, which had a field of nine teams. In the women’s competition, College of Charleston was first among the nine schools.

Both the men’s and women’s teams will be back in action on Saturday, Oct. 31 for the Southern Conference Championship at Furman University.
