Tuesday's women's golf roundup

Wofford finishes second at Loyola Whistling Straits Intercollegiate

SHEBOYGAN, Wis. – Sophomore Nicole Chin claimed runner-up honors to lead the Wofford women’s golf team to second place at the Whistling Straits Intercollegiate. The tournament spanned Monday and Tuesday and was hosted by Loyola University of Chicago at Meadows Valley at Blackwolf Run.

Meadows Valley played as a challenging par-72, 6,100-yard course. The back nine has been used for both the 1998 and 2012 U.S. Women’s Open and wind gusts of over 25 miles per hour didn’t make playing conditions any easier.

The Terriers battled to finish second at 116 strokes over par. Just five of the nine teams in the field took less than 1,000 strokes through the tournament’s three rounds. Richmond won the team competition with a 103-over 967.

Chin was one of just seven players in the field to break 80 in Monday’s first round. She opened with a 7-over 79, making a birdie on the par-4 second and no more than bogey the rest of the way. Chin made three more birdies in the final two rounds combined, carding a second-round 82 and final-round 80 to finish at 25-over-par 241. She was beaten only by Northern Iowa’s Paige VanDyk (+16).

Junior Katy Funk also earned a top-10 in the 51-player field. Funk began the tournament with back-to-back rounds of 8-over 80, sinking three birdies through her first 36 holes. She added one more birdie in her final round and took eighth place at 29-over 245.

Seniors Emiley Pagrabs and Meagan Higgins tied for 17th with a pair of 37-over-par 253s. Pagrabs was able to recover from a 91 in the first round, bouncing back with rounds of 80 and 82. Sophomore Lela Oakley was 30th (+45).

Wofford will host the fifth annual Terrier Intercollegiate next Monday at Tuesday at The Country Club of Spartanburg.
