PINEVILLE, N.C. – Senior Natalie Lackey netted her first goal of the season in the 83rd minute to loft Furman to a 1-0 victory over VMI in Southern Conference women’s soccer action on Tuesday afternoon at the OrthoCarolina Sportsplex.

With the match scoreless and under seven minutes left, Lackey took a pass from Sanon Williams on the left side of the box and battled through a defender before punching a shot past the charging goalkeeper at the 82:40 mark.

The Paladins dominated possession and chances throughout the match but struggled to find the net. Furman struck the crossbar in the opening five minutes and Stephanie DeVita and Carlie Couch each missed wide after being played through on the keeper.

In the second half, Emily Graves fired a left-footed shot off of the left post for the Paladins’ best chance to that point.

Furman outshot the Keydets 19-3, including a 6-0 edge in shots on goal. Maggie Grisell notched the shutout in goal to improve her record to 9-2-1.

The Paladin secured a 10-win season for the fifth straight year and 18th overall.

Furman hosts ETSU on Friday night before closing its home schedule versus Western Carolina on Sunday.

VMI hosts The Citadel on Friday at 4 p.m.
