UTC?s Boyle Named SoCon Wrestler of the Week

SPARTANBURG, S.C. – Chattanooga sixth-year senior Sean Boyle has been named the Southern Conference wrestler of the week for all competition from Dec. 24 to Jan. 6. The selection is made by the league office.

Boyle went 6-1 at UTC’s Defense Soap & Flips Wrestling Southern Scuffle on Jan. 1-2, taking third place in the 125-pound bracket. The Lowell, Mass., native, in his first season for the Mocs after transferring from Michigan, topped a pair of ranked wrestlers along with the way, with his lone loss coming at the hands of No. 3 Alan Waters of Missouri.

Boyle opened his Scuffle run with an 18-2 technical fall over Army’s Sean Badua and followed that up with a 7-3 win over Virginia’s Will Mason.

After falling to Waters to drop to the wrestlebacks, Boyle got back on track with a 6-2 win over Iowa State’s Kyle Larson before posting an 8-0 major decision over Cleveland State’s Ben Willeford.

Boyle then closed his tournament with consecutive wins over ranked wrestlers, picking up an 8-4 decision over No. 10 Tyler Cox of Wyoming before clinching his third-place finish with an 11-9 victory over No. 11 Eddie Klimara of Oklahoma State.

Boyle, whose podium run saw him jump 10 spots to No. 10 nationally at 125, helped the Mocs to a 14th-place finish in the highly competitive, 31-team field. Fourth-ranked Penn State, the four-time defending NCAA team champion, won the tournament for the fifth straight season.

Chattanooga (3-3) is back in action at the Virginia Duals on Jan. 9-10, taking on West Virginia and Edinboro on Friday, with Saturday’s opponents yet to be determined.

Also nominated: Aaron Walker (The Citadel) and Anthony Elias (Davidson).
