Friday's Men's Tennis Recaps

Winthrop 4, Wofford 3

SPARTANBURG, S.C. – The match came down to the wire at the Reeves Tennis Center on Friday afternoon as the Wofford College men’s tennis team faced its first setback of the 2015 season in a tight, 4-3 loss to the visiting Eagles of Winthrop University.

It was a tight contest from the beginning, as Wofford (1-1) lost the doubles point, which would prove to be costly in the end. Senior Walker Heffron and junior Parks Thompson ended first at No. 2, dropping a 6-2 decision to Winthrop’s Tremayne Mitchell and Steven Patrick. Junior David Sklar and sophomore Trevor Gotkowski made things interesting, earning a 6-4 victory over Ruben Franzanti and Michael Chen at No. 3, but Winthrop’s Dylan Comerford and Peter Nagovnak would win the No. 1 spot over senior Rob Galloway and sophomore Haris Poric, 6-3, to take the doubles point.

In singles play, the teams were dead even, with Wofford winning the top three spots and Winthrop taking the remaining three. Galloway was the first to finish, rolling past Comerford, 6-1, 6-1, to knot the team points back up. Next, the No. 6 spot was decided, as Chen gave freshman Parks Schoen his first collegiate loss, defeating him 6-0, 6-4.

Gotkowski was third to finish. After a tight first match, he eventually fell, 7-5, 6-2 at the No. 4 position. Poric drew the singles points even once again, earning a 6-4, 6-4 win at the No. 2 position.

Heffron and Thompson played to three sets each, needing to win both to win the match. Thompson, who played at No. 4, finished first, dropping the match 3-6, 6-4, 6-4. Heffron defeated Nagovnak, 5-7, 6-4, 6-4, but the three-set victory wouldn’t be enough for a Wofford win.

The Terriers look to bounce back tomorrow, as they take on the visiting Aggies of North Carolina A&T at Reeves Tennis Center. First serve is set for noon.
