UNCG Hosts Spartan Team Challenge
WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. - The UNCG men’s and women’s track team hosted the UNCG Spartan Team Challenge Sunday afternoon at the JDL Fast Track in Winston-Salem, N.C.
In the fourth heat of the 400-meter run, Haley Wenos finished the race in 1:07.09.
In the 800-meter race, the Spartans got their top finish of the day. Katherine Link took first place overall with a time of 2:18.55. Link was with the lead pack throughout the whole race, but pushed her way to the front in the final stretch to come away in first. The time was another new personal best for the redshirt sophomore, as she beat her time of 2:21.33 that she set at the Art and Linda Maillet UNC Open last weekend. Eira Jensen finished in fifth place with a time of 2:23.76.
Meaisha Bullock ran in the third heat of the 200-meter dash, finishing in 28.71. The time was a new personal best for the junior. Tiana Green took third place in the fourth heat, with a time of 27.43.
On the men’s side, freshman Bryan Whyms had a strong performance with a fourth place finish in the one-mile run with a time of 4:26.64. Classmate Luke Sumerford finished the race in 4:32.10. Dakarai Shipp wrapped up in 4:32.88.
John Elwood took sixth in the first heat of the 800-meter run with a 1:59.65 finish.
The Blue and Gold’s 4x400 relay team made up of Elwood, Jonathan Hodge,David Guthrie, and Whyms finished in 3:38.61.
The Spartans will be back the JDL Fast Track next weekend to compete in the Hilton Garden Invitational. The meet will take place over two days, kicking off at 1 p.m. on Friday January 30, and wrapping up on Saturday January 31.
Hayworth Breaks Record at UNCG
GREENSBORO, N.C. – Gaston Hayworth's record breaking performance was among the highlights on Sunday afternoon as the Wofford College indoor track & field team competed in the UNCG Spartan Team Challenge.
Hayworth broke the school's weight toss record for the third time this season, tossing 12.94 meters, good for a third place finish.
The men's distance medley, made up of Alex Michaels, Travis Butler, Ben Hensley and Cristian Widenhouse earned a second place finish with a solid time of 11:02.50.
The women's side had impressive performances of their own. Freshman Kasey Widmyer hit the 10.83 meter mark in the triple jump, good enough for fourth in the conference. In the women's 400 meters, sophomore Faith Jewkes earned an eighth place finish, finishing with a time of 1:03.32. Junior Emily Williams earned a fifth place finish in the shot put, throwing for 9.70 meters.
The Terriers compete again on February 6-7, heading to Johnson City, Tennessee for a meet at East Tennessee State University.
