Brickell Sets Furman 5,000m Indoor Record At Vanderbilt Invitational
KNOXVILLE, Tenn. - Sophomore Josh Brickell set a new Furman record in the 5,000m to lead the Paladin indoor track and field team Friday at the Vanderbilt Invitational in Knoxville, Tenn. Brickell placed second with a time of 14:27.02, breaking the former record of 14:29.18, set last season by Tanner Hinkle.
Rookies Aaron Templeton and Frank Lara also competed in the 5,000m, placing 3rd and 4th, respectively. Templeton turned in a time of 14:29.98 in the event, while Lara crossed the line in 14:37.87. The Paladin men’s distance medley relay team of sophomores Nate Riech and Brock Baker, freshman Austin Sprague, and senior William Ivey took third place with a time of 10:11.62.
Sophomore Laura Miller placed ninth with a time of 17:17.84 in the 5,000m to lead the Furman women’s team on Friday. Freshman Emma Mashburn finished 14th at 17:36.90, while sophomore Bryce Seymour took 18th place with a time of 18:19.14.
The meet will conclude on Saturday. The women’s mile run will begin at 10:30 a.m. The final event of the meet, the men’s 4x400m relay, is set to commence at 5:30 p.m.
ETSU's Edgecombe Wins 60mH on Day One at Hokie Invitational
BLACKSBURG, Va. – The ETSU track & field program notched a pair of top-two event finishes on day one at the Hokie Invitational inside Rector Field House on the Virginia Tech campus.
Highlighted on the women’s side, senior hurdler Dede Edgecombe continued her tear in the women’s 60 meter hurdles on Friday. After taking home the event title to start out the season last week at ETSU Track & Field Invitational, Edgecombe carried over the momentum to this week as she claimed the top qualifying position with a 8.43 time in the event preliminaries. Later, in the event final, the hurdler raced to a time of 8.48 to take the top spot among eight competitors.
For the men, junior Thomas Miller followed up last weekend’s event title in the men’s 800 meter run with another strong showing in a different event. In the men’s 600 meter finals, Miller recorded a runner-up 1:20.84 time among 20-plus event participants. The junior was slightly edged at the finish line by winner Prince Owusu-Mensah from Virginia Tech with a time of 1:20.60.
Also with a solid performance, junior sprinter Keturah Williams followed up a fourth-place 7.62 time in the 60 meter dash preliminaries with a sixth-place finish in the event finals with a faster time of 7.61.
In addition, senior jumper Nicole Alexander placed sixth out of 18 competitors in the women’s triple jump with a collegiate-best leap of 11.62 meters and senior vaulter Chris Winkle tied for fifth in the men’s unseeded pole vault with a personal-best mark of 4.72 meters.
Martin, Jackson Lead VMI on Day One at Tech
BLACKSBURG, Va. - Avery Martin posted an IC4A qualifying time in the mile and Julian Jackson finished fourth in the 300-meters, leading VMI track and field on the opening day of the Hokie Invitational, contested Friday in Blacksburg, Va.
Martin rebounded resoundingly from a difficult open mile at last weekend's season opener to finish 11th overall Friday, crossing the line with a new personal best of 4:12.80 and becoming the first Keydet to qualify to this season's IC4A meet.
Jackson, meanwhile, finished fourth overall in the rarely contested 300-meter dash. Jackson timed in at 34.79 seconds in the event.
In other results, Daniel DeNijs finished 12th in the 3,000-meters, crossing the line in 8:39.05, while Lee Warren was 14th in the 60-meter hurdles (8.50). Pete Reed (7.04) and Aron Long (7.05) also picked up top 20 finishes, placing in a tie for 16th and 18th in the 60-meter dash.
On the women's side, the most notable result came from freshman Deborah Allison, who finished 19th in the 60-meter hurdles by timing in at 9.15 seconds. That stands as the third-fastest time in school history, and two of the top three marks have been recorded in the opening two weeks of this season.
VMI track and field returns to action Saturday, as the Keydets continue competition at the Hokie Invitational. Action gets underway at 11 a.m.
Tevin Williams Leads The Citadel on Day One at Bob Pollock Invitational
CLEMSON, S.C. – Tevin Williams won the men's 400 meter dash with a time of 51.16 on day one of the Bob Pollock Invitational in Clemson, S.C.
Garrett Graham finished in 10th place with a mark of 52.66 in the same event for the Bulldogs.
Devin Singleton started his collegiate career with an impressive performance, finishing in first place in the 200 with a time of 23.10 and seventh place in the 60 with a mark of 7.25.
William Sloane, Grant Smith and Jamie Cunningham nabbed third, fourth and fifth place in the 5,000 with times of 15:39, 16:01 and 16:12, respectively.
Geno Porter represented The Citadel in the weight throw with a heave of 57'01" to finish in second place overall.
On the women's side, the distance medley relay team of Jess DeWitte, Alex Moss, Emani Little and Jackie Thompson recorded a time of 13:09 to place fourth overall.
Tanisha Bethel took 11th in the 200 with a mark of 26:53 while Sarah Johnson placed 17th, crossing the finish line in 27:08. Kennisha Holmes placed 25th with a mark of 28.21 and led the Bulldogs in the 60 with a time of 8.36 to finish in 18th.
Calian Colquitt led the Bulldogs in the 5,000, placing third with a time of 18:54, while Grace Jenkins and Nicole Ogilbee followed with seventh and 11th place finishes and marks of 19:38 and 20:03, respectively.
