SPARTANBURG, S.C. – Chattanooga heavyweight Jared Johnson has been named the Southern Conference wrestler of the week for all competition from Jan. 14-20. The selection is made by the league office.

Johnson went 2-0 and scored bonus points in each match as the Mocs opened their SoCon slate with a pair of wins last week.

In Chattanooga’s 26-12 road win over Gardner-Webb on Friday, Johnson earned a 9-1 major decision over the Runnin’ Bulldogs’ Justin Kozera.

Two days later, the Jefferson City, Mo., sophomore pinned Campbell’s Cody Ryba in 1:41 in the Mocs’ 46-0 home win. The win moved Johnson’s record to a team-best 22-6 on the season. He is 11-1 in dual bouts.

Johnson’s award is his second this season, as he was also the SoCon wrestler of the week on Dec. 24.

Chattanooga (7-5, 2-0 SoCon) return to the mats Friday when it hosts The Citadel (4-4, 2-1 SoCon) for a league dual at 6 p.m. The match will stream live on the SoCon Digital Network.

Also nominated: Vito Pasone (Appalachian State), Aaron Walker (The Citadel), Scott Patrick (Davidson), Derek Nagel (SIUE) and Shabaka Johns (VMI).
