Appalachian State tops The Citadel
BOONE, N.C – Appalachian State returned to the mats on Sunday to take on The Citadel Bulldogs. The Mountaineers (6-6, 3-0 SoCon) defeated the Bulldogs 21-13 for their third Southern Conference victory of the season.
The match started at 165 pounds with App’s Nick Kee taking on Will Connell. Kee won by technical fall 20-4 to give Appalachian and early 5-0 lead. Forrest Przybysz made it two wins in a row when he defeated Kenneth Radford 3-1.
Appalachian led 8-0 when Nick Vetell took the mat to face Jack Duane for the 184-pound match-up. Vetell won with a 7-3 decision. At 197 pounds Marcus Johnson squared off with 2014 NCAA qualifier Marshall Haas. Johnson dropped a 12-5 decision to give The Citadel its first points of the match.
Denzel Dejournette got the Mountaineers back on track with a 2-0 decision win over Joe Bexley at heavyweight. Appalachian led 14-3 going into the intermission.
After the break, Dominic Parisi helped extend the Mountaineer lead when he won a 7-2 decision over Jaoquin Marquez at 125 pounds. Vito Pasone followed up Parisi’s decision win a 12-1 major decision of his own to push the Appalachian lead to 21-3.
The Mountaineers would then drop decisions at 141 pounds and 149 pounds. At 141, Michael Longo dropped a close 3-2 to Tyler Buckiso. At 149, Javon Johnson was defeated 8-0 by SoCon Wrestler of the Week Matt Frisch.
In the last match of the day, Zack Strickland took on No. 15 Aaron Walker, who was a 2014 NCAA qualifier. Walker defeated Strickland 8-3 but it was not enough for the Bulldogs as Appalachian won 21-13.
The Mountaineers will be in action next Saturday at the Varsity Gym for the Appalachian Open.
The Citadel (4-4, 2-1 SoCon) returns to action Friday at Chattanooga at 6 p.m. in a match that will appear on the SoCon Digital Network.

Chattanooga shuts out Campbell
CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. – The University of Tennessee at Chattanooga wrestling team breezed through a 46-0 shutout against Campbell at Maclellan Gym on Sunday. The Mocs scored their 17th consecutive Southern Conference win to improve to 7-5 overall and 2-0 in league matches.
Campbell only dressed five wrestlers and forfeited at 125, 133, 141, 149 and 197. The Mocs, needing a break from a busy stretch of matches, did not make a number of their starters weigh in, including senior Sean Boyle. That resulted in a double-forfeit at 125.
UTC was up 18-0 before the first whistle for the 157 match. Despite the big lead, the Mocs did not take their competition lightly. They only allowed three takedowns in the five contested bouts, while scoring two pins and a major decision.
Junior Austin Sams won his sixth match in a row with a 4-3 decision over Daniel Luty. Sams escaped twice in the third period to improve to 13-11 on the year and 2-0 in league matches.
Freshman Justin Lampe scored his first collegiate win with a 20-6 major decision over Garrison Matthews at 165. Lampe joined the team before the spring semester and dropped his first seven matches. He broke through Sunday with eight takedowns and two back points.
Sophomore Sean Mappes had a second-period pin against Monte Britton to give UTC a 31-0 lead. He is 11-5 at 174 this season.
Campbell’s best chance to get on the board was Ville Heino at 184. Heino had already beaten UTC junior John Lampe twice and the Mocs’ regular starter, sophomore John Shrader, was sitting this one out. Sophomore McCoy Newberg, normally a 174-pounder, went up a weight to take on a big challenge.
Things were going the Camels’ way early when Heino built a 4-2 lead after the first period. Newberg nearly rode Heino out in the second but gave up an escape for a 5-2 deficit. Newberg got the crowd on its feet late in the third with an escape and a takedown to force overtime. He then preserved the team shutout with a takedown in the first overtime period.
Junior Jared Johnson was impressive at heavyweight in the final match of the day. He improved to a team-leading 22-6 with a first-period pin against Cody Ryba.
The Mocs are home for their next three matches, beginning with a visit from The Citadel on Friday, Jan. 23. Match time is set for 6 p.m. in Maclellan Gym.
Campbell (0-6, 0-4 SoCon) is back in action Thursday when it hosts Gardner-Webb at 6 p.m.
