TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – The No. 70 UCF Knights downed Furman, 4-0, in men’s tennis action Sunday at the Florida State Invitational at the Scott Speicher Tennis Center in Tallahassee, Fla.
The Knights won the doubles point to open play. Chris Barrus and Inaki Espindola posted a 6-2 win over senior Jacob Behal and sophomore Adam Steryous at flight one, and Tyler Pate and Jose Sangroniz teamed up to defeat senior Matt Browne and junior Ben Horst, 6-4, in the second-seeded match. The flight three match was unfinished.
UCF won matches at flights two, three, and five singles for the team win. Sangroniz beat Browne, 6-3, 6-4, at flight two, and Espindola recorded a 6-1, 6-1, win over Behal at flight three. Reece Acree won set one, 7-6(7-5), at flight five, before sophomore Juan Sheppard retired from set two due to injury.
Matches at flights one, four, and six were unfinished, but the Paladins won set one in all three matches. Steryous led Francesc Aulina, 6-4, 6-0, at flight one, and Horst won the first set, 6-3, at flight four over Barrus. Freshman Stefan Rhodes held a 6-4, 6-0 lead at flight six versus Pate when UCF clinched the match.
Furman (0-3) returns to action Saturday when the Paladins play at South Carolina at 3 p.m.
