Binghamton rallied past Gardner-Webb

BOILING SPRINGS, N.C. – Binghamton rallied for three consecutive decisions Friday night at Gardner-Webb and captured a 20-15 win over the Runnin’ Bulldogs in Paul Porter Arena.

Gardner-Webb (3-5) surged in front midway through, getting a quick pin from 165-pounder Austin Trott to go up 12-10. Trott finished off the Bearcats’ Zack Zupan in 44 seconds to improve to 16-4 overall with his team-best seventh pin of the season. The ‘Dogs pushed ahead 15-10 with another strong effort, this time from Brett Stein at 174 pounds. Stein battled to a 5-3 decision over Steven Schneider and gave GWU plenty of momentum.

Binghamton (3-4) pulled out its second overtime win of the night at 184 pounds, with Jack McKeever recording a takedown to defeat Gray Jones, 4-2, and pull the Bearcats within two team points (15-13) with two bouts remaining.

A 13-5 major decision by Binghamton’s Caleb Wallace over Boyce Cornwell was pivotal, putting the Bearcats in front 17-15 with ace heavyweight Tyler Deuel in line to finish the night’s action against Gardner-Webb’s Justin Kozera.

Deuel took a 10-5 decision to seal the win, improving to 12-3 individually in the process.

The first two bouts of the evening were grueling battles, with each going into overtime. Binghamton’s David White outlasted Cortez Starkes at 125 pounds, using a late escape to post a 4-3 win in the second overtime. The Runnin’ Bulldogs bounced back on the shoulders of Tyler Ziegler at 133, as his takedown in overtime resulted in a 3-1 win over Joe Nelson.

An 11-3 major decision by Nick Tighe over Ryan Hull at 141 pounds shifted momentum, but Gardner-Webb’s Ryan Mosley pulled the ‘Dogs back within one team point in the 149-pound bout, capturing a 6-1 decision over Dylan Caruana with a late flurry.
