SPARTANBURG, S.C. – Furman forward Stephanie DeVita has been named the Southern Conference women’s soccer player of the week for all competition from Sept. 22-28. The selection is made by the league office.
DeVita scored twice against ETSU on Friday in a battle of the top two teams in the SoCon standings. DeVita’s first score, which came in the 14th minute, proved to be the game-winner in the Paladins’ 3-0 victory. The Simpsonville, S.C., junior added an insurance goal in the 55th minute.
DeVita, the 2012 SoCon Player of the Year and Freshman of the Year, played all 110 minutes Sunday to help Furman to a 1-1 draw at Western Carolina, which is in the midst of a six-match unbeaten streak.
Furman’s 1-0-1 week was good for four points during the opening weekend of league play, leaving the Paladins at 7-2-1 overall and in a four-way tie for first atop the SoCon standings.
The active career leader in goals in the SoCon, DeVita has 41 to her credit so far, tying her for sixth in league history. With 95 career points, she is just two away from entering the top 10 in SoCon history.
Furman returns to action Friday when it hosts The Citadel (4-8, 0-2 SoCon) at Stone Soccer Stadium at 7 p.m.
Also nominated: Washida Blackman (Mercer), Katherine Rodriguez (UNCG), Malcanisha Kelley (Samford), Crystal Mackezyk (Chattanooga), Nicole Blixt (VMI) and Christina White (Western Carolina).
