Samford third at Chris Banister Classic
GLENCOE, Ala. – The Samford University women's golf team carded a second-round total of 311 on Monday to remain in third place at the 2014 Chris Banister Classic hosted by Jacksonville State University at the par-72, 5,943-yard Silver Lakes Golf Course.
Samford (310-311=621) holds a six-stroke advantage over fourth-place Jacksonville State (316-311=627) but trails first-place Troy by 13 strokes and second-place Morehead State by 10 shots. The third and final round of competition is slated to begin Tuesday at 7:30 a.m. (CDT).
Individually, the Bulldogs' Emily Stallings turned in a second-round tally of 2-over-par 74 on Monday and sits tied for third place in the event. Stallings, Samford's senior native of Fayetteville, Ga., only trails first-place Fatima Fern Cano of Troy by two strokes. Cano blistered the course on Monday with a tournament-best 2-under-par 70.
For the second straight round, the Bulldogs' Bailey Gray and Arin Eddy both posted identical scores of 79. The pair is tied for 22nd place in the three-day competition and owns a 36-hole total of 158 (79-79).
Samford's Haley Harrington also registered a second-round score of 79 on Monday. The Bulldogs' sophomore from St. Francisville, La., sits tied for 25th place in the tournament and heads into the final round of play with a two-day total of 159 (80-79). Rounding out Samford's scoring this week is sophomore Sydney Needham with a 36-hole mark of 160 (79-81).
The Bulldogs' Kate Collom and Haley Wagner are competing as individuals this week and are turning in solid scores. Collom boasts a two-round tally of 160 (79-81), while Wagner finished 36 holes at 170 (85-85).
Play in the 2014 Chris Banister Golf Classic will resume Tuesday at 7:30 a.m. (CDT) at the Silver Lakes Golf Course.
Harris leads, Mercer sixth at Forest Oaks Fall Classic
GREENSBORO, N.C. – Mercer sophomore Katy Harris needed only 142 strokes, thanks in part to an ace in round one, to finish Monday's opening 36 holes of the UNCG Forest Oaks Fall Classic atop the individual leaderboard. As a team, Mercer compiled a team score of 610 to close the day in sixth place.
Mercer will enter Tuesday's final round just one stroke behind host UNCG for fifth place and 11 strokes behind Elon for the tournament lead. Rollins, James Madison and Maryland are tied for second at 608.
Harris got off to a hot start on Monday, carding a hole-in-one on the 172-yard par-3 third hole en route to a 2-under 70. Harris came back to finish the day's proceedings with an even-par 72 in the second round.
The sophomore currently leads 95 other competitors and will begin the final round two strokes ahead of second-placed Alexandra Papell of Maryland.
Sophomore Marin Hanna is tied for 23rd place after posting rounds of 75 and 78. Senior Sarah Louie Brown is part of an eight-way tie for 46th place after shooting 82-76 on Monday.
Freshman Hannah Mae Deems is currently tied for 54th with rounds of 81 and 78, while senior Meredith Owen is tied for 69th 162 after shooting 80-82.
Tuesday's final round is slated for an 8:30 a.m. start.
UNCG 10th at Forest Oaks Fall Classic
GREENSBORO, N.C. – UNCG senior women’s golfer Berglind Bjornsdottir sits in seventh place overall to lead the Spartans in the first day of the UNCG Forest Oaks Fall Classic after 36 holes of play. The Spartans as a team are tied for 10th in the standings with the third and final round set for an 8:30 a.m. shotgun start at the Forest Oaks Country Club.
UNCG is slated to tee off from holes Nos. 9-11 in the third round Tuesday.
Bjornsdottir is in seventh place overall with a 3-over-par 147 after opening the day with an even-par 72 before carding a 3-over-par 75 in round two. She trails tournament leader Katy Harris of Mercer by five strokes after Harris recorded a 2-under-par 142 (70-72) as the only golfer under par through two rounds. Bjornsdottir opened with four birdies, four bogeys and 10 par scores in round one before notching one birdie, four bogeys and 13 pars in round two.
The Spartans are tied for 10th in the team standings at 42-over-par 618 after posting a 306 score in round one and a 312 score in round two. Elon leads the team standings with a 23-over-par 599 (298-301), while James Madison, Rollins and Maryland are tied for second at 608.
Sophomore Kristin Powers is second on the team in 20th place after 36 holes. Powers opened with a 3-over-par 75 before carding 5-over-par 77 in round two, sitting 8-over-par 152 after the first day. Junior Sammie Buchanan rounds out the Spartans’ top three with a 10-over-par 154.
Junior Jessica Madsen is tied for 83rd at 168 (86-82), while senior Andrea Rangel rounds out the lineup with a 170 (83-87). Sophomore Maddie MacClurg is playing as an individual and is at 18-over-par 162 (76-86).
Joining the Spartans in the field on the 6,267-yard course are Appalachian State, Charleston Southern, Cincinnati, Elon, Gardner-Webb, High Point, Jacksonville, James Madison, Longwood, Maryland, Mercer, North Florida, Presbyterian, Radford, Rollins, UNCW and Winthrop.
