ETSU?s Short named SoCon Player of the Week

SPARTANBURG, S.C. – ETSU defender Hannah Short has been named the Southern Conference women’s soccer player of the week for all competition from Aug. 25-31 after leading the Bucs to a pair of double-overtime wins last week. The selection is made by the league office.

Short, a junior from Bristol, England, scored three of the Bucs’ four goals on the week, two of which were golden goals, as ETSU (4-0) remained undefeated on the year.

Short got her dramatic week going with the lone goal in ETSU’s win over Appalachian State on Thursday. After a scoreless regulation and first overtime period, Short lifted the Bucs to the win with her strike in the 107th minute.

Three days later against Campbell, Short again provided the heroics, pulling ETSU level in the 71st minute – less than two minutes after the Camels had taken a 2-1 lead – and going on to score another double-overtime winner in the 103rd as the Bucs won 3-2.

The three goals on the week pushed Short’s season total to a career-best five, surpassing the four she scored last season, through just four games.

ETSU, which rejoined the SoCon this year after spending the previous nine seasons in the Atlantic Sun Conference, has now had consecutive SoCon players of the week for the first time in program history, as Short’s teammate Simona Koren took the honor on Aug. 26. The Bucs previously played in the SoCon from 1997-2004.

ETSU concludes a four-game homestand this week when it hosts South Carolina State on Tuesday and Alabama A&M on Thursday before hitting the road to face Francis Marion on Sunday.

Also nominated: Karina Schneider (The Citadel), Stephanie DeVita (Furman), Tess Patton (Mercer), Candice Forbes (UNCG), Heather Lacy (Samford), Crystal Mackezyk (Chattanooga) and Maureen Buff (Wofford).
