Chattanooga ties for sixth at Cardinal Cup
SIMPSONVILLE, Ky. – The Chattanooga Mocs ended their day where it started, in sixth place at the Cardinal Cup at the University of Louisville Golf Course. Tuesday’s 308 provided a final total of 912, which is eight back of fifth-place Middle Tennessee.
Isabella Loza had the low round Tuesday with a 75. Agathe Sauzon added a 76, while Emily McLennan turned in a 78. Megan Woods was a shot behind at 79 to complete the counting cards. Sarah Dolmovich had the drop score with an 83. Cris Perez, playing as an individual, had an 80.
McLennan was low for the tournament for the Mocs. She tallied a 9-over-par 225 to end up 13th. Loza (T26) and Sauzon (T29) also finished in the top 30.
Louisville came from behind for the team win. Starting the day in second behind the Blue Raiders, the host shot 295 to finish at 888, six strokes clear of Memphis in second. Bradley’s Danielle Lemek’s 69 Tuesday vaulted her to medalist honors at 3-under 213. The 36-hole leader Michaela Fletcher (Memphis) ended up second at plus-1.
It is a busy week for the Mocs. The squad tees it up Friday at the Mason Rudolph Championship at the Vanderbilt Legends Club in Franklin, Tenn.
Wofford finishes seventh at William & Mary Invitational
WILLIAMSBURG, Va. – Freshmen Nicole Chin and Lela Oakley led the Wofford women’s golf team to a seventh-place finish on Tuesday at the William & Mary Fall Invitational, contested at the Kingsmill Resort, Plantation Course.
Chin and Oakley headed a final-round charge that saw the Terriers jump from ninth to seventh. Chin carded a 1-over 73 to earn Wofford’s best individual finish of a tie for 13th (+10), while Oakley fired Wofford’s low round of the tournament of even-par 72 and finished tied for 20th (+14).
As a team, the Terriers posted a final-round total of 12-over 300 – the team’s best round of the tournament – to finish the three-day event at 60-over 924. Tuesday’s round was good enough to catch Towson and Appalachian State, which finished eighth (+61) and ninth (+65), respectively, in the 13-team field.
Senior Lauren Dunbar carded her second straight 3-over 75, earning a spot in the top 25 at 16-over 232. Sophomore Katy Funk tied for 50th (+24) and junior Maegan Higgins placed 52nd (+25).
Elon won the tournament with a total of 19-over 883. Kelsey Badmaev took home the individual title at even-par 216, beating out Anna Kim of St. John’s (+1) by a single stroke.
The Wofford women’s golf team competes at the Lady Paladin Invitational next Sunday through Tuesday. The three-day, 54-hole event will be hosted by Furman at the Furman University Golf Club.
UNCG finishes 23rd at Powerade Cougar Classic
HANAHAN, S.C. – UNCG sophomore women’s golfer Kristin Powers fired a career-low 2-under-par 70 in the final round of the 2014 Powerade Cougar Classic on Tuesday at the Yeamans Hall Club.
Powers’ 2-under par is her career-best score for 18-holes collegiately, bettering her previous mark of 76 set last year at the Eagle Landing Invitational. She carded four birdies and only two bogeys to go along with 12 pars in the final round. She finished the 54-hole event at 10-over-par 226 (80-76-70) to finish in a tie for 59th place.
UNCG finished the tournament in 23rd place with a 933 score (307-313-313), while Arkansas won the event with an 846 score (283-284-279) and UCLA was second at 853 (290-279-284). Sandy Choi of Duke won the Cougar Classic individually with an 11-under-par 205 (69-68-68), while three other golfers were tied for second at 10-under-par 206.
Junior Sammie Buchanan finished the tournament in a tie for 82nd place with a 230 score (72-81-77). Senior Berglind Bjornsdottir added a three-round score of 233 (75-75-83), while junior transfer Jessica Madsen carded a 244 (80-81-83) and sophomore Maddi MacClurg added a 254 (81-82-91).
The Spartans return to action Sept. 21-23 as they travel to Greenville, S.C, for the Lady Paladin Invitational.
