Sunday's Women's Soccer Roundup

ETSU 4, Howard 3 (2OT)

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Playing in front of friends and family, just 20 miles from her hometown of Lorton, Va., senior defender Summer Peterson scored a 109th-minute golden goal to lift ETSU over Howard, 4-3, in double overtime Sunday.

Peterson's game-winning header, her second goal of the season, came off a corner kick from Jasmin Dutton. Peterson is one of seven ETSU players to record multiple goals this year.

Dutton assisted on three of the Buccaneers' (7-1) four goals on the day and leads ETSU with 12 assists this season. To begin the week, Dutton ranked as the nation's assists leader.

The Bucs achieved their goal of beginning the game strongly, as junior Hannah Short netted her 11th goal of the season just 28 seconds into the match. Short went on to add another goal in the 81st minute to push her team-best total to 12 goals.

Short has now scored a goal in nine consecutive matches dating back to last season, which ties her for 12th in the NCAA Division I Women's Soccer Record Book for most consecutive matches with at least one goal.

Following Short's early goal, the Bison (0-5-1) responded with two goals of their own (17', 30'), taking a 2-1 lead into intermission.

Sophomore Molly Collinson netted an equalizer in the 49th minute, with Short providing the assist.

However, Howard responded once more, recapturing the lead on a 66th-minute goal by Treschelle Gibson-Serrette, her second score of the match.

Trailing 3-2, Dutton assisted a Short goal for the second time on the day, crossing a ball from the left side that Short put past the Howard keeper to force overtime and set the stage for Peterson's eventual game-winning golden goal.

The Bucs outshot the Bison, 32-12, in the match, including 6-1 in the two overtime periods.

After spending the weekend in Washington, D.C., ETSU will return to Johnson City, Tenn., to host USC Upstate on Friday, Sept. 19, at 7 p.m., and Tennessee on Sunday, Sept. 21, at 7 p.m.

Mercer 2, Presbyterian 1

MACON, Ga. – The Mercer women’s soccer team defeated Presbyterian, 2-1, on Sunday afternoon at Bear Field.

The Blue Hose (2-3) took an early 1-0 lead in the third minute when Keri O’Neill slipped the ball past Cristina Mursuli just seconds after Mursuli knocked away a free kick from Presbyterian.

Mercer (4-3) tied the game, 1-1, in the sixth minute when Brianna Stampler found Lauren Gassie at the right corner of the box and Gassie scored from 15 yards out.

The Bears took the lead in the 65th minute off a second goal from Gassie. This time she was assisted from Washida Blackman and took the shot from the top center of the box and landed it in the left corner of the net.

Mursuli got the start between the pipes for Mercer and made two saves in the first half. Maggie Cropp entered the goal for the second half and also made two saves for the Bears.

Next up, Mercer will travel to Atlanta to face Georgia State on Friday, Sept. 19, at 7 p.m. The Bears’ next home game is on Sunday, Sept. 21, at 2 p.m. against USC Aiken.

UNCG 2, NC State 2 (2OT)

GREENSBORO, N.C. – After 110 minutes of play, the UNCG women’s soccer team tied 2-2 with ACC opponent NC State on Sunday night at the UNCG Soccer Stadium.

The Spartans sit at 2-4-2 on the season and the Wolfpack also has an identical 2-4-2 record.

After UNCG held a 2-0 halftime lead, NC State came charging back scoring two second-half goals to send the game into overtime.

In the 69th minute, Brittany Stanko crossed a shot into the box, where Kayla Saager put a shot on frame, but junior goalkeeper Kirsten Glad made the initial save. Saager poked the rebound into the net to cut the lead to 2-1. It was Saager’s fourth goal of the season.

Two minutes later, the Wolfpack caught a break as Alexa Allen’s shot deflected off a Spartan defender into the goal to tie the game at 2-2. It was Allen’s first goal of the season.

The Spartans had a couple of chances in the second half as junior Chesney White received a ball inside the box, but her shot attempt went just wide in the 78th minute.

A couple of minutes later, Glad made back-to-back saves to keep NC State off the board and keep the game tied. Allen had a shot turned away by Glad in the 79th minute.

With the clock winding down, the Spartans were awarded a free kick in the 86th minute as sophomore Rebecca Burrows fired a shot but Wolfpack keeper Mackenzie Stelljes made the save.

In the first overtime, UNCG had a corner kick in which defender Kelsi Peters found a chance inside the box, but her shot just hit the crossbar.

NC State had two golden chances with under a minute left in the overtime but Glad was able to make both saves to keep the game tied 2-2.

In the second overtime, the Wolfpack had two shots but Glad turned away Michell Oestreich with less than two minutes remaining.

UNCG took 11 shots in the game with White leading the way with six attempts. NC State finished with 24 shots, including 21 in the second half and two overtime periods.

Glad, making her first start at UNCG, made eight saves in the contest. Stelljes made four for NC State.

In the first half, the Spartans controlled the possession and quickly jumped out to a lead.

In the eighth minute, UNCG struck first after sophomore defender Georgia Brown dribbled in and played a pretty cross to White, who tapped in the goal. It was White’s fourth goal of the season and gave Brown her first assist.

The Spartans added to their lead after White dribbled past a defender and fired a strike past the keeper for her second goal of the game. White leads the team with five goals in eight games.

UNCG continues its recent homestand by hosting High Point on Sept. 19 at 7 p.m. at the UNCG Soccer Stadium.

No. 17 Clemson 1, Wofford 0

CLEMSON, S.C. – The Wofford College women’s soccer team weathered the No. 17 Clemson Tigers’ offense for 84 minutes before giving up a goal to drop a tough, 1-0 loss at Historic Riggs Field on Sunday afternoon.

Clemson’s Katelyn Reeve would score the game-winning goal late on to put the Tigers up. In the 84th minute, Clemson’s Claire Wagner took a shot on goal, which senior keeper Kara Boggs managed to deflect. As Boggs got up, a Clemson forward collided with her, sending her to the ground. The Terrier defense did its best to keep the goal out, but a wide pass from Katie Beuerlein was intercepted by Reeve before she struck it home.

Boggs would be helped off the field, with senior Shonte Campbell playing the remaining six minutes of action in goal for the Terriers.

Junior midfielder Mary Beth Bleekrode would take the Terriers’ lone shot in the 87th minute but was unable to find the back of the net.

Boggs’ 12 saves were tied for the fourth most in a single game at Wofford. Boggs also had a 15-save performance last year, on Nov. 3 against UNCG, which marked the program’s second-most saves in a game.

The Terriers were outshot 39-1, and Clemson held the corner kick advantage 19-0.

Clemson began the match with a heavy press and kept the ball in its attacking third for the majority of the game. The Tigers got off multiple attempts in the first few minutes but couldn’t find the back of the net. In the 11th minute, Boggs logged her first save of the match in a one-on-one scenario in which she dove on a shot from Clemson’s Paige Reckert. A minute later, Boggs would add a pair of athletic saves, leaping to deflect two high shots coming off of Clemson corner kicks.

Senior forward Annika Jansson had a promising run in the 15th minute, making the first real chance for the Terriers. Jansson found herself one-on-one with the keeper before eventually being called offside.

The Terriers continued to endure pressure from the Clemson attack. The period ended on a sliding defensive block by Mary Kathryn Macklen, saving a near goal in the 44th minute. The two teams entered halftime knotted at nil, despite Clemson’s 23 shots.

The second half began with more offense from Clemson. In the 49th minute, junior defender Lucy Etro made a crucial defensive save, sending the threatening ball away. The ball was shot again on the rebound by Allie Kington, but Boggs leapt for another goal-thwarting save.

The two teams felt each other out and played back and forth until the 84th minute, when Reeve scored the game-winner.

Despite her 12-save performance, Boggs dropped to 3-2-0 on the season, while Hunter Rittgers earned her first win of the season at 1-0-0.

The women’s soccer team will prepare for their next matchup on Friday, when they head down to Fort Myers, Florida, to take on Florida Gulf Coast University at 7 p.m. The team will then venture to Boca Raton, Florida, on Sunday, where they will play Florida Atlantic at 1 p.m.to wrap up the weekend’s action.

No. 25 Georgia 4, Furman 0

GREENVILLE, S.C. – The 25th-ranked Georgia Bulldogs tallied three first-half goals, including a pair from sophomore Marion Crowder, en route to a 4-0 victory over Furman in nonconference women’s soccer action on Sunday evening at Stone Soccer Stadium.

The loss dropped the Paladins to 5-2-0 on the season and ended Furman’s four-match winning streak, while Georgia improved to 5-1-1 with its third consecutive shutout.

In the 15th minute, Crowder took on two Paladin defenders down the left channel before creating space to rip a shot from just outside the box that beat a lunging Rose Hull to the middle of the goal. Georgia doubled its lead at 21:38 when Hull made a diving save on a Bulldog shot, but Crowder pounced on the rebound and fired into an empty net for her second goal of the night.

Bella Hartley upped the margin to 3-0 at the 28:33 mark by volleying a shot past the Paladin defense from 9 yards away for her first goal of the season.

Furman’s best chance of the half came late in the period when India Robinson was played through the UGA back line, but her shot from a tight angle on the right side was off target.

Lauren Tanner capped the scoring and gave Georgia a 4-0 cushion in the 56th minute. The Bulldogs won a free kick at the top of the box and Rachel Garcia stepped up to line a shot through the Paladin wall. Hull made the diving save, but Tanner tapped in the rebound at 55:46 for her second goal of 2014.

Stephanie DeVita came closest to putting Furman on the board in the 63rd minute, only to see her bending shot from high on the left side tipped off of the crossbar and cleared from danger.

Georgia held a 17-15 edge in shot attempts and 12-5 advantage in shots on goal. Louise Hogrell turned away five shots to earn the victory, while Hull stopped six shots for Furman. Maggie Grisell recorded two saves in almost 30 minutes of action off of the Furman bench.

Furman returns to action on Friday when it hosts the Jacksonville Dolphins in its final nonconference game. Kickoff on Seagraves Field at Stone Stadium is set for 7 p.m.

St. Bonaventure 2, VMI 0

ITHACA, N.Y. – The match was scoreless for the first 73:40 on a day that saw the VMI Keydets post their highest shot total of the year, but the St. Bonaventure Bonnies scored two late goals to prevail, 2-0, in the third game of the women’s soccer Big Red Shootout, hosted by Cornell.

The Bonnies (3-4-1) struck in the 74th minute. After several deflections off Keydet (1-5) defenders, Danielle Vis settled the ball and beat VMI keeper Emily Marbury from 18 yards out to give SBU a lead it would not relinquish. The Bonnies added a 90th-minute goal with the Keydets down a player, due to an 80th-minute red card.

The game saw the Keydets post 13 shots, a season-high, while SBU held a 28-13 edge in that statistic. The Bonnies had a 12-2 edge in corner kicks, while VMI’s two keepers, Marbury and Kirsten Hancock, combined for 11 saves to three for SBU goalie Christina Sarokon.

The Keydets had two of the first three shots Sunday, including a Kristen Whitehurst try in the fifth minute that was stopped by Sarokon. SBU rallied with back to back shots on goal, but Hancock stopped Vis in the sixth minute and Abby Maiello in the 11th to keep the match scoreless.

The Bonnies continued to pressure the Keydet goal, but Hancock was up to the task in the 21st minute and again in the 26th, stopping tries to keep SBU off the board. The Keydets counterattacked in the 40th minute, but an Alex Frank shot was high, as was a Killian Buckley attempt in the 43rd as the match went to the half tied, 0-0.

Hancock remained in to start the second half and turned aside two more SBU tries, doing so at 46:21 and 51:38. The Keydets built another offensive rally in the 57th minute, but Nicole Blixt was turned aside by Sarokon and then missed wide two minutes later. Emily Adams then misfired on two shot attempts and Marbury entered in goal for VMI in the 63rd minute.

Blixt missed wide at 65:57 and SBU regained offensive control shortly thereafter. Marbury made stops at 68:48, 69:34 and 70:38, and the match was still scoreless. After a corner kick, Marbury turned aside Vis at 71:03 to keep it 0-0, but could not do so two minutes later as SBU took the 1-0 lead.

VMI came back in the 80th minute with a Myranda Emery try on goal that was saved, and shortly thereafter, Keydet Lizzy Cotter was assessed a red card. VMI was still able to get two additional shots off, but could not score and the Bonnies saw Reilly Dougherty score on a 90th minute header to account for the final margin.

VMI women’s soccer will return to action Friday, as the Keydets play host to Radford at Patchin Field. Action gets underway at 4 p.m.

Fordham 2, The Citadel 0

NEW YORK – Fordham took advantage of a pair of rebounds to score both of its goals in a 2-0 victory over The Citadel in a women's soccer contest on Sunday.

After being held to only two shots in the first half, the Bulldogs put more pressure on Rams goalkeeper Ally White with a pair of shots and a corner kick in the opening three minutes of the second period but were unable to capitalize.

Fordham added an insurance goal with 30 minutes left when Jessica Widmann put in a rebound off a Canicatti shot that hit the crossbar.

Lipscomb 2, Samford 0

NASHVILLE, Tenn. – The Samford University soccer team suffered its first road defeat in three weeks Sunday as the Bulldogs dropped a 2-0 decision against the Lipscomb Lady Bisons in a nonconference contest held at the Lipscomb Soccer Complex.

With the loss, Samford (4-4) dropped to 3-2 on the road this season. Heading into Sunday’s matchup with Lipscomb (5-3-1), the Bulldogs were in the midst of a three-match road winning streak, which included consecutive victories against No. 18-ranked Auburn, 2-1, Jacksonville State, 3-2, and Georgia State, 2-1.

Before Sunday’s setback against the Lady Bisons, Samford’s only other road defeat on the season was a hard-fought 2-0 decision at No. 14 South Carolina.

Lipscomb’s goals were both scored by Ellen Lundy in the second half of play Sunday. In the 69th minute of action, the Lady Bisons’ sophomore native of Rogers, Ark., knocked home the game-winning goal off a crossing pass from Anna Lail. Her initial score of the contest was her third of the 2014 season.

Just over 12 minutes later, Lundy tallied her second goal of the night and gave Lipscomb its decisive 2-0 advantage. On the play, Lundy fired the unassisted shot from 30 yards out that found the back of Samford’s net.

The Bulldogs were outshot by Lipscomb, 11-4, in the first half of play, but Samford rebounded to even the total at 4-4 in the final stanza.

True freshman goalkeeper Anna Maddox registered seven saves before being replaced by Melissa Montgomery in the 83rd minute of action.

Lipscomb defeated Samford for the first time in school history.

The Samford University soccer team will next be in action Friday at 7 p.m. (CDT) as the Bulldogs close out their current three-match road swing against the Austin Peay Lady Govs in a meeting of former Ohio Valley Conference rivals to be held in Clarksville, Tenn.

Vanderbilt 6, Chattanooga 0

NASHVILLE, Tenn. – University of Tennessee at Chattanooga freshman keeper Hannah Dunn made 16 saves in the Mocs’ 6-0 loss to Vanderbilt on Sunday afternoon at the Vanderbilt Soccer/Lacrosse Complex.

Dunn grabbed seven saves in the first half while allowing five goals, but in the second half she allowed just one goal and snared nine saves. Her 16 saves ranks her 10th at UTC for a single game.

Chattanooga held off the Commodores for the first 20 minutes of the game before Simone Charley, with her second goal of the season, ripped the net with a shot from the near right side to the far corner. That was quickly followed with a goal just 1:17 later, this time from the left wing from Colby Ciarrocca for her team-leading fifth. Both goals were unassisted.

Charley assisted on Vandy’s third goal in the 29th minute off the foot of Asley Oswald. It would be nearly 15 minutes before the Commodores would break through the Mocs’ defense, getting a goal off a bounce off the crossbar. Vanderbilt added a fifth goal before the half.

Chattanooga senior Crystal Mackezyk had the only shot of the game for Chattanooga in the first half. The Commodores added just one goal in the second half before the Mocs’ defense held on to keep it at six for the game.
