Furman Cross Country Teams Finish Second at Clemson Invitational
CLEMSON, S.C. - The Furman cross country teams opened the 2014 season with a second-place finish at the Clemson Tiger Invitational Saturday at Musser Farms in Seneca, S.C. The Paladins finished second behind Clemson in both the men’s and women’s meet, with the Paladin men scoring 36 points and the Furman women tallying 40 points.
Paladin freshman Frank Lara led all Furman runners, placing fourth in the men’s four-mile race with a time of 20:22.59. Furman claimed four of the top 10 spots in the race, as rookie Mark Hadley finished in fifth place with a time of 20:27.10, followed by sophomore Brock Baker, who placed sixth with a time of 20:34.45. Redshirt freshman Josh Brickell took 10th place at 20:40.70. Freshman Austin Sprague rounded out the Paladin scorers with an 11th-place finish (20:53.89).
Sophomore Troy Reeder placed 18th at 21:32.23, while senior Jack Morgan posted a time of 21:49.31 for 26th place. Junior Jack Miller was 29th (22:10.33), followed by sophomore Lee Shearer in 30th-place (22:15.67). Senior William Ivey finished 33rd after turning in a time of 22:24.90
The Paladin women placed five runners among the top 10, as sophomore Allie Buchalski placed sixth with a time of 18:37.33 on the three-mile course, followed by freshman Jacquelyn Crow, who was seventh after posting a time of 18:37.49. Senior Sinead Haughey placed eighth at 18:37.52, while sophomores Grace Tinkey (18:39.26) and Laura Miller (18:44.00) were ninth and tenth, respectively.
Freshman Emma Mashburn posted a 12th-place finish with a time of 18:48.78, while sophomore Bryce Seymour claimed 15th-place at 19:00.54. Sophomore Maddie Wolfe completed the Furman slate at 19:03.51 for 17th-place.
The Paladins will compete at the Furman University Cross Country Classic on September 13.
Lantz Duo Leads Bulldogs at Carolina Invitational
COLUMBIA, S.C. - Freshman Michael Lantz and his older brother, senior Raeven, finished at the front of the pack Saturday morning at the Carolina Invitational in Columbia, S.C.
Michael clocked in at 15:54 in the 5k race to take second place in his first collegiate meet as a Citadel Bulldog while Raeven finished right behind him in third, crossing the finish line in 16:05.
Also finishing among the top five for The Citadel were Ross Jordan (7th, 16:34), Darrell Hayden (12th, 17:23) and William Sloane (19th, 18:01). The men's team finished second overall, falling behind Tennessee Tech by 12 points.
Jackie Thompson led the women's team, clocking in at just over the 20-minute mark at 20:22 in the 5k to place 16th. Callian Colquitt finished 20th with a mark of 20:57 while Nicole Ogilbee placed 30th with a time of 21:33. Rounding out the top-five runners for the Bulldogs were Jess DeWitte (31st, 21:39) and Emily Fields (32nd, 21:46).
On Friday, The Citadel freshmen squads opened their collegiate careers at the Coastal Carolina Invitational in Conway, S.C.
James Cunningham ran an impressive time of 17:03 in the 5k to finish 14th while Edwin Davis placed 18th with a time of 17:12 to lead the Bulldogs.
James Howlin and Charles Braddock placed 26th and 27th, respectively, with times of 18:16 and 18:24 while Andrew Irrea (29th) and Jonathan Clymer (30th) crossed the finish line in 19:33 and 19:30. James Bath took 31st with a mark of 20:25.
The women's team was led by Grace Jenkins who clocked in at 22:04 to place 29th. Karen Grier followed Jenkins with a time of 23:08 to finish 36th.
Rounding out the women's side were Paige Herbst (37t, 23:28), Elizabeth Webster (39th, 24:29) and Cynthia Martinez (41st, 27:41).
The entire Bulldog team will return to action Saturday, Sept. 13 at the Furman Invitational in Greenville, S.C.
Cross Country Opened Season At Elon In Dual Meet
GREENSBORO, N.C. – The UNCG men’s and women’s cross country teams opened the 2014 season Saturday morning by taking part in the UNCG-Elon Dual Meet hosted by Elon at the Elon Cross Country Course. Both the men and women ran on the 5,000-meter course in the season-opening race, which saw Elon claim both team victories.
On the men’s side, freshman Luke Sumerford was the Spartans’ top finisher placing seventh overall. Sumerford posted a time of 17:15.63 in his first career collegiate race while Elon’s Sam Geha won the men’s race with a time of 16:20.85.
Two more true freshmen rounded out the top three finishers for UNCG as Brandon King and Bryan Whyms finished ninth and 10th, respectively. King posted a time of 17:31.53 while Whyms clocked in at 17:34.35.
On the women’s side, sophomore Katlyn Adkins was the Spartans’ top finisher in 10th place overall with a time of 22:39.29. Elon’s Jenny Gallagher won the women’s 5,000-meter race with a time of 18:26.87.
Rounding out the top three for the Spartans was sophomore Samiiah Wilson and freshman Sarah DeSantis. Wilson placed 11th overall with a time of 23:10.13 while DeSantis turned in a tie of 23:21.41 for a 12th-place showing in her first career collegiate race.
The UNCG cross country teams will return to action Sept. 13 on the same course as it takes part in the annual Elon Invitational.
