GREENVILLE, S.C. – Charlie Arndt, a volunteer assistant coach for the Furman men’s soccer program for the past 19 seasons, has been elected to the University of South Carolina Athletics Hall of Fame, it was announced on Tuesday.
Arndt earned first-team All-America honors as a senior at South Carolina in 1988 while also being named the National Goalkeeper of the Year. He compiled 13 shutouts as a senior in helping lead the Gamecocks to their first semifinal appearance in the NCAA tournament. Arndt holds South Carolina’s records for lowest career goals-against average (0.70) and combined shutouts (29).
“Charlie was an outstanding goalkeeper during our time at South Carolina and has been very important to the success we have had here at Furman over the past two decades,” said Allison, who played alongside Arndt at South Carolina and was elected to the South Carolina Athletics Hall of Fame in 2011. “We are all very excited to see him receive this honor.”
As a member of head coach Doug Allison’s staff at Furman, Arndt has helped the Paladins to a 247-107-37 overall record, nine Southern Conference regular-season titles and six SoCon tournament crowns. The former Gamecock goalkeeper has coached nine players that went on to be selected in the Major League Soccer SuperDraft, including United States National Team standouts Clint Dempsey and Ricardo Clark. Arndt’s Paladin goalkeepers have earned All-SoCon honors in 14 of his 19 seasons with the Paladins and captured NSCAA All-South Region accolades six times.
The seven-member hall of fame class, which also includes former Paladin baseball assistant coach Landon Powell, will be honored at a reception on Sept. 4, in Columbia, S.C, and at halftime of the Gamecocks’ Sept. 6 game versus East Carolina.
