Quinn, Chapman Tabbed NCBWA Freshman All-America

LYNCHBURG, Va. – Samford outfielder Heath Quinn was named to the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association’s Freshman All-America first team on Monday, while Georgia Southern third baseman Garrett Chapman was named to the second team.

This marks the second time Quinn has been named to a Freshman All-America team. Quinn and teammate T.J. Dixon were named to the Louisville Slugger Freshman All-America team by Collegiate Baseball earlier this month.

Quinn was named the Southern Conference’s Freshman of the Year at the conclusion of the regular season. He was also named second-team all-conference, as well as all-freshman, by the SoCon.

Quinn hit .319, ranking third overall on the team, and second among everyday starters. He led the team in doubles with 20 and he ranked second in hits with 73. Quinn tied for second on the team in RBIs with 48, and he tied for third on the squad in home runs with nine.

Quinn helped lead the Bulldogs to a 35-25 overall record, marking just the third time the team has won 35 games in program history. The team reached the title game of the Southern Conference tournament for the third time in the last four years.

Chapman was the first freshman Eagle since 1984 to lead the team in batting average, as he hit .341 in 59 starts in the infield. The freshman third baseman also hit seven doubles and eight home runs with 32 RBIs.

Chapman was also selected as a Freshman All-American by Collegiate Baseball Newspaper on June 4.

The NCBWA selected a total of 32 standout freshmen to its 2014 Freshman All-American teams. The two teams feature players from 17 leagues and six conference championship teams including the Eagles, who won the 2014 SoCon Championship.

The 2014 NCBWA National Freshman Player of the Year and National Freshman Pitcher of the Year will be announced on Tuesday, June 10.

Founded in 1962, the NCBWA is dedicated to the advancement of college baseball. Membership is open to writers, broadcasters and publicists of the sport.
