ATHENS, Ga. – Making its NCAA Women’s Tennis Championship debut, the 75th-ranked Elon University women’s tennis team dropped a 4-0 decision to top-ranked Georgia on Friday, May 9, at the Dan Magill Tennis Complex.
Elon finishes the 2014 season with a 15-9 record. UGA moves to 22-4 with the win and faces 37th-ranked Florida State tomorrow at 4 p.m., as the Seminoles topped Arizona, 4-3, earlier today.
Today marked the final match for the senior class of Jordan Johnston, Frida Jansaker and Bryn Khoury, as the trio ends their career with a total of 64 dual match wins – the most by a senior class in program history.
“I couldn’t be prouder of our team and everything they’ve accomplished this season,” said Elon head coach Elizabeth Anderson. “They fought incredibly hard today against a very talented Georgia team and I’m proud of the effort and determination they had today and all season long. Our seniors have been an absolute joy to work with. Everything they’ve accomplished with tennis and academics has been wonderful. They’ve been everything you would hope for and more and I’m incredibly proud of them.”
The Bulldogs took a 1-0 lead after winning on courts one and three in doubles. Jordan Johnston and Barbora Lazarova jumped out to a 2-0 lead on court one, but UGA’s second-ranked tandem of Kate Fuller and Silvia Garcia stormed back, winning 8-2. On court three, Bryn Khoury and Taylor Casey dropped an 8-2 decision to Lilly Kimbell and Caroline Brinson.
UGA went up 2-0 following a 6-0, 6-0, win on court four, as the 102nd-ranked Kimbrell topped Barbora Lazarova.
The Bulldogs took a 3-0 lead shortly thereafter, as Maria Camara Ruiz dropped a hard-fought 6-0, 6-2, decision to Kate Fuller. UGA sealed the win on court three, as Khoury fell to 20th-ranked Maho Kowase, 6-1, 6-1.
Jansaker battled 15th-ranked Garcia tough on court two, as the match went unfinished with Jansaker dropping a 6-4 decision in the first set.
