SPARTANBURG, S.C. – Appalachian State sophomore Clare Cox has been named the Southern Conference Women’s Tennis Player of the Week for all matches played March 31 through April 6. Cox posted a perfect 6-0 mark last for the Mountaineers as Appalachian State went 2-1 last week. After dropping a 4-3 decision to Elon to start the week, Appalachian State knocked off Wofford (5-2) and Western Carolina (6-1).
Playing at the top singles position for the Mountaineers, Cox downed Elon’s Jordan Johnston in straight sets (6-2, 7-5) before topping Wofford’s Sarah Evans (7-6 [7-3], 6-0). The Greensboro, N.C., native closed the week with a 6-4, 3-6, 10-7 victory over Western Carolina’s Stacia Kissell.
Paired with McKayla Zupan at No. 2 doubles for Appalachian State, the Mountaineers’ pair went 3-0 last week to close the season on a four-match win streak. Cox and Zupan held off Elon’s Maria Ruiz and Frida Jansaker, 8-6, before downing Wofford’s Taylor Carison and Kalli Karas, 8-1. Cox and Zupan closed the week with an 8-7 (7-3) victory over WCU’s Megan McLinden and Nicole Kelley.
The Mountaineers (7-15, 3-6 SoCon) close out the regular season on Thursday (April 10), when they host Gardner-Webb.
Other top performers in the Southern Conference included Davidson’s Brites Moniz-Soares, Elon’s Frida Jansaker, Furman’s Ansley Speaks, Georgia Southern’s Giulia Riepe, Samford’s Yasmeen Ebada, Chattanooga’s Alexa Flynn and Wofford’s Audrey Coventry.
