Chattanooga 4, Elon 3
CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. – The Elon University women's tennis team dropped a 4-3 decision today, April 6, against the Chattanooga Mocs at the UTC Tennis Courts to fall to 4-3 in Southern Conference play this season.
The afternoon got off on the right foot for the Phoenix with Jordan Johnston and Barbora Lazarova taking an 8-2 victory on doubles court No. 1 over Kaylene Chadwell and Alexa Flynn, but both Elon duos on court Nos. 2 and 3 couldn't build on the finish at No. 1 and Chattanooga picked up what turned out to be a match-deciding doubles point.
The Mocs kept the momentum going into singles, but only two of the four singles matches were decided in straight sets.
Johnston was the first Elon player to fall in dropping a 7-5, 6-1 decision on court No. 1 against Kayla Jones.Maria Camara Ruiz also fell by a score of 7-5, 6-1 on court No. 5 to Claire Mulyadi. Mulyadi's victory gave Chattanooga its fourth and final point of the match.
The two straight-set wins sandwiched a 6-3, 3-6, 6-1 loss for Lazarova to Flynn on court No. 3. Lazarova has now dropped four of her last five matches after starting the season 10-1.
Though the match was out of reach, Elon's final three singles players put up a valiant effort in winning on court Nos. 2, 4 and 6 to win the final three matches of the afternoon.
In her first match action since March 16 against Wake Forest, Tolley Rice pulled out a 6-3, 6-7, 1-0 (10-2) super tiebreaker victory on court No. 6 to earn Elon's first point. She was followed by Bryn Khoury and Frida Jansaker, who each had to recover from loses in their respective first sets to win matches, as Khoury won 5-7, 6-3, 6-1 on No. 5 and Jansaker won 1-6, 6-3, 7-5 on No. 2.
Jansaker's victory moved her season mark to 12-3. The senior is 12-1 in her last 13 matches since starting the season 0-2 with losses against Virginia Tech and Georgia.
Appalachian State 6, Western Carolina 1
BOONE, N.C. – Jessica Thaggard earned her 10th singles win of the season on Senior Day and Appalachian State University women’s tennis rolled to a 6-1 win over Southern Conference rival Western Carolina on Sunday at the Appalachian Tennis Courts.
The Mountaineers (7-15, 3-6 SoCon) swept all three doubles matches to earn the doubles point and earned straight-set victories in four of six singles matches to top the Catamounts (1-15-1, 0-7) in their final conference match.
Appalachian’s No. 3 doubles team of Brianna Armellino/Megan Mullen set the tone early with an 8-4 win while the No. 1 pairing of Mackenzie LaSure/Gabrielle Wreder earned an 8-7 (7-4) win and the No. 2 team of Clare Cox/McKayla Zupan came away with an 8-7 (7-3) victory.
In singles play, LaSure made short work of her opponent in a 6-2, 6-1 win at the No. 2 spot while Thaggard scored a 6-4, 6-0 win at the No. 5 position. The Mountaineers wrapped up the match when Mullen earned a 6-3, 6-3 win at No. 6.
Armellino and Cox added two more points to the scorebook for the Apps later in the day. Armellino grabbed a 6-4, 6-2 win at No. 4 while Cox earned a hard-fought 6-4, 3-6, 10-7 win at No. 1
Samford 7, UNCG 0
BIRMINGHAM, Ala. -- The Samford University women’s tennis team tallied its sixth shutout victory of the 2014 dual-match campaign Sunday, including their third in four outings, as the Bulldogs blanked the UNCG Spartans, 7-0, in a late-season Southern Conference contest held indoors at the Samford Tennis Center.
With its lopsided victory, Samford (16-2, 7-1 SoCon) remained undefeated at home this season and extended its winning streak at the Samford Tennis Center to 13-consecutive matches. In 2014, the Bulldogs boast a brilliant 11-0 record at home.
UNCG (7-11, 4-3 SoCon) dropped its second SoCon match in consecutive days Sunday and finished its weekend road swing with an 0-2 record. On Saturday, the Spartans lost at Chattanooga, 5-2.
Samford proved to be triumphant in all nine of its contests against UNCG.
The Bulldogs swept the three doubles matches Sunday and then breezed to six straight-set victories in the singles competition.
Comprehensively this season, Samford owns a sterling 41-11 record in doubles play, including an impressive 20-4 mark against SoCon opponents. The Bulldogs also hold a remarkable 85-20 record in singles play.
Samford’s doubles combinations of Kristin Lewis and Stephanie N’tcha, as well as Yasmeen Ebada and Carita Moolman are both undefeated this season. Lewis and N’tcha, the Bulldogs’ No. 1 doubles tandem, boasts an unblemished 6-0 record in dual-match play, while Ebada and Moolman are also perfect at 5-0.
In singles play Sunday, Samford’s N’tcha, Lewis and Ebada were all victorious to improve their singles records on the year to 14-3, 11-7 and 16-1, respectively. Mallory, the Bulldogs’ talented senior of Louisville, Ky., was also triumphant in singles play and holds the team’s longest winning streak at seven-consecutive matches.
Samford dominated the bottom half of the singles competition versus UNCG.
Mallory cruised to a victory on court No. 5, while Northcutt notched a win on court No. 4 and Lauren Cabellero defeated the Spartans’ Devon Sutherland in the No. 6 singles contest. With their triumphs, Northcutt moved to 14-4 this season and Caballero improved to 11-3.
