Elon leads UNCW Seahawk Classic

WALLACE, N.C. – After two rounds of action at the UNCW Seahawk Classic on Saturday, the Elon women's golf squad leads a nine-team field after finishing the day with a 603 (297-306). The Phoenix has a four-stroke advantage over second-place Delaware with one round to play.

The Phoenix saw a pair of golfers post scores of 146 to sit in a tie for second out of 50 individuals. Sunna Vidisdottir notched rounds of 69 and 77, while reigning SoCon Golfer of the Week Kelsey Badmaev tallied two 73s on the day.

Just four shots back in a tie for sixth is Kathryn Buckingham, who finished at 150 (75-75).

In a tie for 36th is Emily Brooks. Brooks will begin Sunday's final round with a score of 165 (84-81).

Finally, Katie Partridge's 166 (80-86) has her sitting 41st after two rounds of action.

Host UNCW's Lori Beth Adams leads the individual field after ending the day at 145 (74-71).

 

Furman finishes ninth at Ole Miss Rebel Invitational

OXFORD, Miss. – Freshman Taylor Totland (+3) fired a career-best 69 to tie for 14th place to lead the Furman women’s golf team in the final round of the Ole Miss Rebel Invitational on Saturday at the par-72, 6,313-yard Ole Miss Golf Course.

Due to predicted inclement weather in the Oxford area on Sunday, the teams played 36 holes on Saturday to complete the tournament.

Totland, a native of Tinton Falls, N.J., registered three consecutive birdies on No. 13 through 15 during Saturday’s final round to finish the tournament nine strokes back of GRU Augusta’s Jessica Haigwood, who garnered individual medalist honors after shooting 71-70-69=210, the third-lowest 54-hole individual score in the tournament’s history.

Sophomore Stephanie Carlozzi (+5) recorded two birdies on the back nine to score a 74 in the second round then birdied No. 7 and No. 17 for a final-round 73 to tie for 20th place. Sophomore Valentina Romero (+9) birdied one hole in each of Saturday’s rounds for a 75 in the morning and a 77 in the afternoon round, finishing in a tie for 39th place.

Junior Laura DeMarco (+10) carded a 75 in each of Saturday’s rounds with two birdies in the morning round to tie for 46th place, while senior Aubrie Street (+20) tied for 80th place after shooting a 76 in the tournament’s final round.

No. 32 GRU Augusta (+7) won the tournament with a score of 871, the second-lowest 54-hole total in tournament history. Kennesaw State (+10) was second, while No. 33 Tulane (+12) and Texas State (+12) tied for third. The Paladins (+26) carded a 293 in Saturday’s final round, the team’s best round of the spring, to finish the tournament in ninth.

Furman will compete at the Southern Conference Championship on April 13-15 in Hilton Head, S.C.

 

Samford finishes 12th at Rebel Intercollegiate

OXFORD, Miss. – The Samford University women’s golf team turned in its best round of the 2014 Rebel Intercollegiate on Saturday as the Bulldogs closed out the rain-altered, 18-team tournament with a final-round score of 291 at the par-72, 6,313-yard University Golf Club.

Samford completed the three-round, two-day competition with a final team score of 896 (301-304-291). With their stellar third-round performance, the Bulldogs earned a 12th-place finish.

Additionally, Samford concluded the 54-hole event just four strokes behind Ole Miss, which hosted the tournament.

Originally, the teams were scheduled to play 18 holes Friday, Saturday and Sunday, but with expected upcoming inclement weather Sunday, 36 holes were completed Saturday to close out the tournament.

GRU Augusta claimed the overall team title with a 7-over-par 871, which is the second-lowest 54-hole score in tournament history. It also proved to be GRU Augusta’s first Rebel Intercollegiate tournament title.

Individually, GRU Augusta’s Jessica Haigwood won medalist honors with a 54-hole score of 6-under-par 210, which is the third-lowest 54-hole individual score in tournament history.

The field of the 2014 Rebel Intercollegiate consisted of the following 18 teams: Samford, host-school Ole Miss, Coastal Carolina, Colorado State, East Tennessee State, Furman, GRU Augusta, Harvard, Kennesaw State, Kentucky, Memphis, Murray State, Notre Dame, USF, Southern Miss, Tennessee, Texas State and Tulane.

The Bulldogs’ Natalie Mitchell paced the team with a 6-over-par 222 (73-75-74). Mitchell finished the competition tied for 25th place in the individual standings.

Fellow senior Alex Jasper and junior Emily Stallings both closed out the 2014 Rebel Intercollegiate with identical 54-hole tallies of 227 for the Bulldogs. Jasper turned in her best score of the tournament with a second-round mark of 73, while Stallings carded 74s in both the first and third rounds of the competition.

Samford’s Bailey Gray posted a final-round score of 72 on Saturday to finish with a total tally of 229. True freshman Sydney Needham posted the Bulldogs’ best score of the weekend in the final round as she carded a 1-under-par 71 to notch a 230.

The Samford University women’s golf team will next be in action April 13-15, as the Bulldogs return to Hilton Head Island, S.C., for the 2014 Southern Conference Championship, which will be held at the Moss Creek Plantation Country Club.
