SPARTANBURG, S.C. – UNCG second baseman Hunter King and Davidson right-hander Danny Mooney have been named the Southern Conference player and pitcher of the week, respectively, for all games April 21-27. The selections are made by the league office.
King hit .714 on the week as UNCG went 3-1 with a three-game sweep of SoCon rival Elon over the weekend. The junior from Mason City, Iowa, had three doubles, a triple and a home run among his 10 hits on the week. He had seven RBIs and seven runs scored and slugged 1.286 with a .765 on-base percentage.
In UNCG’s first game of the week, a 2-0 loss at Duke on Tuesday, King went 1-for-3.
King hit .818 in the sweep of Elon, UNCG’s first SoCon sweep since the 2011 season. He had multiple hits in each game, starting with a 2-for-3 effort with a run and an RBI in Friday’s 5-1 win. The following day, King fell a home run short of the cycle, going 4-for-4 with two doubles, a triple, three RBIs and three runs scored as the Spartans won 12-3. He completed his stellar week by going 3-for-4 in Sunday’s 13-4 win, falling a triple shy of the cycle with another three RBIs and three runs scored. He also drew walks in each game against the Phoenix.
UNCG (20-19, 7-8 SoCon) hosts Samford this weekend for a three-game SoCon set.
Other top hitters included: Michael Pierson (Appalachian State), Mason Davis (The Citadel), Lee Miller (Davidson), Jake Jones (Furman), Ryan Cleveland (Georgia Southern), Tripp Martin (Samford), Jacob Hoyle (Western Carolina) and Josh Hyman (Wofford).
Davidson’s Mooney threw his first career complete-game shutout on Saturday, blanking Appalachian State 12-0. Mooney allowed just three hits and two walks on the day, striking out six.
Mooney was perfect the first time through the Mountaineers’ order and took a no-hitter into the fifth inning before allowing a two-out single.
The complete game was his second of the season.
The Wildcats would go on to win Sunday, as well, clinching their ninth straight SoCon series win dating back to last season and retaining their spot atop the SoCon standings. Mooney’s victory was good for Davidson’s 14th SoCon win of the season, matching the school record, while Sunday’s win set a new mark. Mooney’s win was also Davidson’s first in Boone, N.C., since the 2006 season.
Davidson (25-12, 15-4 SoCon) will play at Winthrop on Tuesday before completing its eight-game road swing with a three-game SoCon series at Elon over the weekend.
Other top pitchers included: Sean Mason (Appalachian State), Skylar Hunter (The Citadel), Tyler Wood (Furman), Matt McCall (Georgia Southern), Ryan Clark (UNCG), Alex Ledford (Samford), Jordan Smith (Western Carolina) and Will Stillman (Wofford).
