ELON, N.C. – The Elon University men's tennis team, ranked No. 49 in the country, stayed unbeaten in Southern Conference play with a 6-1 victory today, April 2, at the Jimmy Powell Tennis Center against UNC Greensboro.
The win is the first victory for the Phoenix since the 2009 season when Elon topped the Spartans 6-1. Since then, UNCG had won four in a row over the Phoenix.
Lindgren was a key piece in Elon's victory, as the sophomore earned a 6-2, 7-6 (7-5) victory on court No. 2 over Randy Phillips to clinch the match for the Phoenix.
Brian Kowalski was the first player off the court in singles for Elon with a 6-2, 6-1 victory on court No. 4 against Gaston Murray. He was followed by Stefan Fortmann with a 6-4, 6-1 win on court No. 2 before Lindgren clinched the victory.
Jordan Kaufman made it 5-0 in Elon's favor shortly after Lindgren's win, but the Spartans avoided the shutout with Cameron Smith coming out on top against Ismael Sanchez Delfin with a 7-6 (8-6) 6-1 win on court No. 6.
Cameron Silverman, the No. 36 player in the country, finished the afternoon with a 6-3, 6-7, 1-0 (10-4) win in a super tiebreaker on court No. 1 over Ahmet Sarioglu.
Elon swept the doubles point with an 8-6 win from Silverman and Kaufman on court No. 1, an 8-3 victory from Kowalski and Lindgren on court No. 2 and an 8-5 win on court No. 3 from Fortmann and Juan Madrid.
College of Charleston 7, The Citadel 0
CHARLESTON, S.C. - The Citadel tennis team fell 7-0 to crosstown foe College of Charleston Wednesday afternoon at the Earle Tennis Center.
The Bulldogs slipped to 2-26 while the Cougars improve to 10-6 overall.
In the No. 1 doubles position, Elliott Sperr and Dillon Berkabile played neck and neck with the Cougars' Brice Allanic and Crescente Lesser but weren't able to secure the doubles point and were defeated 8-5.
In singles play, Allanic edged Sperr 6-3, 6-4 while Lesser topped Berkabile 6-2, 6-4 at the No. 1 and 2 spots, respectively.
Peter Bleach fell to the Cougars' Zack Lewis 6-4, 6-2 in the No. 3 slot and Oliver Dedding, the No. 4 Bulldog player, fell 6-3, 6-1 to Charlie Chriskey.
Connor Grady battled in the No. 5 position for The Citadel against Alon Faiman but lost 6-1, 6-0 while Joe Bove was defeated by Stephen Hardy 6-1, 6-2 in the No. 6 spot.
Chattanooga 7, Lee University 0
CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. - The University of Tennessee at Chattanooga men’s tennis team snapped a three-match losing streak with a 7-0 sweep of Lee University today. The Mocs won all 10 matches on a beautiful afternoon at the UTC Tennis Courts.
Today’s dual with the Flames of the NCAA Division II Gulf South Conference is a make-up contest from earlier in the season. UTC improves to 6-10 overall while Lee drops to 1-11.
The Mocs jumped out to a 1-0 lead after taking all three doubles matches. Junior Pavels Grigorjevs and sophomore John Peacey teamed together at No. 1 for the first time and scored an 8-7 win over Lee’s Richard Gamble and Daniel Hardesty. Sophomores Luke Saunders and Gino Delavalle improved to 2-1 with their win at No. 2 while freshmen Austin Boaz and Derrick Brown evened their record at 4-4 with a win at No. 3.
The Mocs took the match with three quick singles wins. Peacey shut out Kavin Tan (6-0, 6-0) at No. 4, followed by Brown’s (6-1, 6-1) win over Andre Ishida at No. 6. Grigorjevs closed out the dual with a (6-0, 6-2) win over Alberto Calle at the top spot. Saunders, Delavalle and Boaz also had singles wins on the day.
The Mocs are back on the court on Friday, April 6, against Georgia Southern at 2:00 p.m.
