No. 1 Furman 4, No. 9 Wofford 0

CHATTANOOGA, Tenn.
– Top-seeded Furman (17-5) posted a 4-0 win over No. 9 Wofford Thursday in a quarterfinal matchup of the 2014 Southern Conference Tournament.  The Paladins captured the doubles point and picked up three singles wins in the middle of the order to advance to Friday’s semifinals.

Karlee Bryde and Amanda Murray topped Taylor Carlson and Kalli Karas, 8-4, at No. 3 doubles.  Furman then clinched the doubles point with an 8-3 win at No. 1 from Alex Moreno-Kaste and Katherine Oudin.

Oudin pushed Furman ahead, 2-0, with a straight-sets win over Wofford’s Julia Paulson.  After winning the first set, 6-2, Oudin claimed a 6-0 victory in the second set.

Karlee Bryde knocked off Catherine Martin (6-1, 6-1) at No. 4 singles to give the Paladins a 3-0 lead before Blair Martin clinched the match with a 6-1, 6-1 win over Kalli Karas at the No. 5 spot.

Wofford closes the season at 6-16.

 

No. 4 Elon 4, No. 5 UNCG 0
CHATTANOOGA, Tenn.–  Elon swept No. 5 UNCG 4-0 on Thursday to earn a spot in the semifinals of the Southern Conference Women’s Tennis Tournament.

Elon claimed an 8-0 win at No. 1 doubles, as Jordan Johnston and Barbora Lazarova took down Kayla Gammie and Devon Sutherland. The No. 4 seed Phoenix picked up the doubles point behind Frida Jansaker and Maria Camara Ruiz’s 8-2 defeat of Dilara Yurtkuran and Yasmin Franco at No. 2.

Johnston scored a win for the Phoenix at No. 1 singles, defeating Yurtkuran 6-1, 6-3 and giving Elon a 2-0 team advantage. At No. 2, Jansaker topped Soumeya Anane in straight sets (6-2, 6-2), and Lazarova clinched the Elon win with a 6-4, 7-5 win at No. 4.

The Phoenix will face No.1 Furman at 2 p.m.in the semifinals on Friday.


No. 3 Chattanooga 4, No. 6 Georgia Southern 0

CHATTANOOGA, Tenn.–  The No. 3 seed Chattanooga Mocs earned a spot in the semifinals of the Southern Conference Women’s Tennis Tournament with a  4-0 sweep of No. 6 Georgia Southern at the Champions Club in Chattanooga, Tenn., on Thursday.

The Mocs got their first doubles win of the day from Kayla Jones and Katie Polk at No. 2, as they defeated Stephanie Woods and Giulia Riepe 8-2. Alexa Flynn and Kaylene Chadwell sealed the doubles point with an 8-4 victory over Paola Garrido and Caitlin Kitchen at No. 1.

Flynn posted the first singles victory for the Mocs, earning a 6-0, 6-0 win over Daria Vasenka at No. 3. Jones topped Garrido in straight sets (6-1, 6-2) to push the UTC team lead to 3-0.

Kelsey Coots closed out the match with a 6-1, 6-0 victory over Woods at No. 4, pushing the Mocs into the semifinals.

Chattanooga will play No. 2 Samford in the semifinals at 2 p.m. on Friday.

 

 

No. 3 Samford 4, No. 6 Appalachian State 0
CHATTANOOGA, Tenn.–  Samford topped Appalachian State 4-0 on Thursday to advance to the semifinals of the Southern Conference Women’s Tennis Tournament.

The Bulldogs got a pair of wins to earn the doubles point, as Stephanie N’tcha and Jessica Northcutt posted an 8-0 victory over Megan Mullen and Brianna Armellino at No. 3 and Yasmeen Ebada and Carita Moolman scored an 8-1 win over Clare Cox and McKayla Zupan at No. 2.

Ebada got the first Bulldog win in singles play with a 6-3, 6-3 victory over Gabrielle Wreder at No. 3. N’tcha moved the Samford lead to 3-0 after defeating Cox at No. 1. Northcutt clinched the Samford win with a 6-3, 6-3 win at No. 4 over App’s Armellino.

The Bulldogs advance to face No. 3 Chattanooga   in the semifinals at 2 p.m. on Friday.
