SPARTANBURG, S.C. – Furman Freshman Adam Steryous has been named the Southern Conference Men’s Tennis Player of the Week for all matches played April 7-13. Steryous went 4-0 last week as the Paladins closed the regular season with victories over Davidson (6-1) and Wofford (7-0). 

The Taylors, S.C., native posted a pair of wins at No. 1 singles for the Paladins, as he opened the week with a 6-2, 6-1 victory over Davidson’s Robert Lightbourn.  Steryous then earned a 1-6, 6-4, 1-0 (11-9) win over Wofford’s Rob Galloway. 

Paired with Jacob Behal at No. 2 doubles, the Furman duo produced an 8-7 (7-5) win over Davidson’s Ethan Kallick and Evan Watkins before topping Wofford’s Walker Heffron and Parks Thompson, 8-7 (8-6).

Steryous finished the regular season with a 14-7 record in singles play, including a 7-2 mark in SoCon matches.  He and Behal were 9-9 in doubles play this spring.

Furman (14-8, 8-1 SoCon) earned the No. 2 seed in this week’s Southern Conference tournament.  The Paladins will face either No. 7 Wofford or No.10 The Citadel in Thursday’s quarterfinals.

Other top performers in the Southern Conference included Appalachian State’s Jan-Willem Kleynhans, Elon’s Stefan Fortmann, Samford’s Fares Kilani and Chattanooga’s Derek Brown.
