Wofford Competes at Beynon Catamount ClassicCULLOWHEE, N.C. – The Wofford men's and women's track and field teams had seven athletes that had top-ten finishes as they competed at the Beynon Catamount Classic, hosted by Western Carolina University on Saturday. The women finished in seventh place out of 14 teams scoring 25 total points, while the men finished 11th of 13 teams scoring five points. Alyssa Burkert led the way for the women as she was one of four women to have a top-five finish. Burkert finished third in the 800 meter run crossing the finish line with a season-best time of 2:12.30. In addition to Burkert, Katie Kessler and Sam Hughes finished fifth in the 400 meter hurdles and 1500 meter run respectively. Kessler's time of 1:02.57 was a season-best time for the event. Faith Jewkes also had a top-ten finish as she crossed the finish line in the 400 meter run at 1:02.57, good enough for a 10th place finish. Emily Williams led the way in the field events as she finished fourth in the javelin throw tossing a distance of 33.07 meters. Leading the way for the men, Alex Michaels finished 10th in the 800 meter run as he crossed the finish line with a time of 1:58.35. Ryan Doyle also had a top-ten finish finishing seventh in the 5000 meter run.
UNCG Competes at Joe Hilton InvitationalGREENSBORO, N.C. – The UNCG men’s and women’s track program ran at the Joe Hilton Invitational Saturday at the Irwin Belk Track on the campus of North Carolina, setting 10 outdoor personal-bests in the process among the two programs.
Freshman Patrick O’Grady posted the Spartans’ top finish on the men’s side, placing 11th overall in the 3,000-meter race with a personal-best time of 9:10.06. Classmate Jonathan Hodge also placed 11th in his race, the 800-meter distance, with a personal-best time of 1:58.66. Sophomore John Elwood finished with a time of 2:00.61 in the 800-meter race, finishing 13th overall. The Spartans set two additional personal-best times in the mile distance Saturday. Junior Dylan Belles placed 20th in the mile with a time of 4:15.84 while senior Tyron Alston was 24th in a time of 4:17.40.
Seniors Shaina Sumney and Chelsea Sumney placed first and second respectively in the 3,000-meter steeplechase race, their first ever appearance in the event. Shaina finished first with a time of 10:36.38 while Chelsea was second with a time of 10:42.99. Sophomore Katlyn Ayers was the Spartans’ next best finisher on the afternoon, placing ninth in the 3,000-meter race with a time of 10:32.25. The Spartans turned in three more personal-bests in the mile distance on the women’s side. Sophomore Katherine Link was 18th in a time of 5:00.81, senior Kelly Montague was 23rd in a time of 5:12.95 and sophomore Eira Jensen was 25th in a time of 5:14.78.
Citadel Competes at Carolina CupRock Hill, S.C. - The Citadel track and field team completed a successful weeknight meet on Thursday at the Carolina Cup held at the Irwin Belk Track in Rock Hill, S.C.
Mick Noel earned second place in the high jump, clearing the bar at 6'3.25" while Jackson Nosbisch took third with a mark of 6'0.75".
Valian Brown posted his season best in the triple jump with a leap of 44'5.25" and placed fourth.
Ian Aikman recorded his career best in the javelin with a throw of 152'9" to finish in third and earned his season-best mark in the pole vault, clearing the bar at 13'5.25".
Richard Bertrand threw his personal best in the discus with a mark of 128'10" to finish seventh overall while Kevin Poland posted his career best in the 100 with a time of 11.39 and a season-best time in the 200, clocking in at 23.17.
On the women's side, Danielle McKee ran her personal best in the 1500, crossing the finish line in 4:56.05 to place seventh and move into No. 4 in program history.
Alex Moss posted her career best in the 400 hurdles with a time of 69.37 while Savannah Emmrich jumped her season best in the pole vault with a mark of 10'6" and finished in fourth.
Western Carolina Competes At Beynon Catamount ClassicCullowhee, N.C. – Western Carolina wrapped up its home meet, the Beynon Catamount Classic, as a final tune-up leading up the Southern Conference Outdoor Championship Saturday afternoon at the Catamount Athletic Complex.
The Catamounts took the top spot in the first eight spots of the 100m dash with Tayla Carter paving the way with a time of 11.62 seconds. Janise Robinson finished in second with a season-best time of 12.11 seconds narrowly missing her careers best by .01 thousandths of a second. Xaveria Bass took third with a career-best time of 12.27 seconds.
Carter took her second first place finish of the day in the 200m matching her season-low time and setting a new Beynon Catamount Classic meet record with a time of 23.73 seconds. Genevieve Emrick finished in second after a personal best time of 24.61, and Corina Archie-McMillan followed in third place with a time of 24.96 for a personal best.
In the 400m, it was Emrick setting a new personal best, Beynon Catamount Classic best and Catamount Athletic Complex best time of 54.31 seconds en route to a first place finish. Archie-McMillan trailed Emrick finishing in second with a personal best time of 55.53 seconds. Shiniqua Proyor took third with a time of 56.82 seconds for a personal best time. It was the first time in Proyor’s career she finished with a time below 57 seconds.
In the 800m run, WCU took the top two spots with Lena Elliott taking first place after a time of 2:11.71, and Hayley Tomlinson finishing in second place after season low time of 2:12.03.
WCU also swept the podium finishers with all three finishing on the podium setting new personal bests in the 100m hurdles with Bass shattering her previous personal best time crossing the line in 13.92 second taking first place. LeNiesha Kearse finished in second place with a time of 14.19 seconds, and Brittany Diggs cruised to a 3rd place finish after a time of 14.49 seconds. Bass’ time was also a new Beynon Catamount Classic record.
Michaela Birek set a new meet record in the 400m hurdles crossing the finish line with a time of 1:02.75 placing her in the first. Holly Gaines followed close behind taking second place after narrowly edging her previous career best time of 1:03.59 with a time of 1:03.55 Saturday. Latasha Pride trailed Gaines finishing in second place.
Michelle Provost snapped her previous personal best time in the 3,000m steeplechase by over 20 seconds with a time of 11:21.31 as she won the event.
WCU’s relay team of Robinson, Carter, Emrick and Lewis won the 4x100m after a time of 46.17 seconds, while the squad of Jocelyn Keen, Micheala Williams, Elliott and Birek took first place in the 4x400m race with a time of 3:49.90.
Bass continued her outstanding day setting a new personal best height and a first place finish in the high jump with a height of 1.74m. Molly Fagan finished in second after a clearing the bar at a height of 1.71m for a new personal best mark. Anisia Starege took third with a height of 1.68m.
In the pole vault, Devyn Ressler won the event with a height of 3.68m, while Korie Bennett took second with a height of 3.38m. Kayla Heineike finish in third with a height of 3.23m.
In the long jump, Chenell Bryan took home first place with a distance of 5.53m, while Fagan finished in third place with a distance of 5.37m.
Bass was the only Catamount to earn a podium spot in the triple jump as she set a new personal best with a distance of 11.21m.
In the throws events, Alisha Bradshaw continued her outdoor dominance with a clean sweep of the three events. She took first in the shot put with a distance of 13.29m, won the discus with a season-high distance of 45.52m and won the with a toss of 51.23m.
Hailey Cook took third in the shot put after a distance of 12.83m and third in the discus after a distance of 39.10m.
In the javelin, Kim Cannon, Anne Greer and Stephanie Burris finished in the top three podium spots with distances of 40.72m, 38.34m and 36.51m respectively. Greer’s and Burris marks were each new personal best marks for athletes.
On the men’s side, Jeffery Hendricks won the 100m dash with a time of 10.62 seconds, while Jermaine Lewis turned in his best time of the season taking second place with a time of 10.82 seconds.
Hendricks turned around and won the 200m with a personal low mark of 21.58 seconds.
In the 400m, Earl Rahming ran the best time of his career, 47.82 seconds, to win the event, while Demari Bosewell took third with the best time of his career, 48.70 seconds.
Aaron Harris set a new personal best time with a mark of 1:53.30 seconds as he won the 800m. Jamie Bigby finished in third after his best time of the season, 1:55.69.
JC Cornett and Michael Cornwell finished in the second and third respectively in the 1,500m after times of 3:57.44 and 3:59.79. Cornett’s time was his best time of the season.
Three Catamounts claimed the top spots in the 5,000m with Travis Alfaro winning the race with a time of 15:24.66, and Clay Howarth taking second after a time of 15:41.01. Chase Fisher finished in the third crossing the finish line in 15:46.15 seconds.
Abraham Faison and Marquis Bailey finished one and two in the 110m hurdles after times of 14.54 seconds and 14.91 seconds.
In the longer of the two hurdle events, the 400m hurdles, Faison missed his career best time by one thousandth of a second finishing the race with a time of 53.49 seconds to win the event. Eric Blake took third after cross the finish line with a time of 55.02 seconds.
WCU’ squad of Lewis, Hendricks, Rahming and Jerry Wickerson won the 4x100m with a time of 40.69 seconds, while the foursome of Ammar Phillips, Lewis, Harris and Bigby won the 4x400m relay with after a time of 3:18.21.
Josh McSwain was the lone Catamount to earn a podium spot in the high jump as he took third after a personal best height of 1.91 meters.
In the pole vault, Dustin Triplett picked up a new career best height as he won the event clearing the bar at 4.84m. Keith Leonard finished in second with a height of 4.70m, and Tim Buzyan took third with a height of 4.55m.
McSwain followed his third place high jump performance up with a first place finish in the long jump after a distance of 7.02m and second place finish in the triple jump with a distance of 14.96m.
Davidson Johnson won the triple jump for the Catamounts with a personal best distance of 15.42m, while Tyler Bell took third also turning in a personal best mark of 14.19m.
Jared Johnson took second in the shot put with a toss of 14.49m and third in the discus after a season-high toss of 42.46m.
In the hammer, it was Andy Benesh earning a podium spot taking second place with after a distance of 48.43m for a new personal best mark.
Georgia Southern Competes at Spec Towns InviteATHENS, Ga. – Georgia Southern’s 4X100m Relay team ran a 45.42 for the second-fastest time in the program’s history. Alyssa Felton, Jasmin Walker, Aarian Tipton and Jordan Fordham were .02 seconds faster than the previous No. 2 time, getting closer to breaking the 45.05 record from 2007. Tipton ran the Eagles’ third-best time with a 24.10 in the 200 meter Dash and is in the top 10 for the 100m Dash.
In addition to Tipton, Walker and Fordham took fifth, seventh and eighth in the 200m Dash with four Eagles recording personal bests in that event. Three more personal bests fell in the 100m Dash with Fordham and Tipton in the top 10 with times of 11.83 and 11.85, respectively. Those times rank them sixth and seventh, respectively, on Georgia Southern‘s all-time list for that event.
In all,14 personal bests were registered Saturday.
Five of the personal bests came in the Hurdles with Deanna Edwards, Lauren Toomer and Taylor Johnson all improving in the 400m Hurdles. The Eagles dominated in the 100m Hurdles with five placing in the top 10 as Dana Edwards and Toomer were second and third, respectively. Dana Edwards and Rasheed both set PRs in the event.
Freshman Asha Stegall finished in the top 10 at eighth in the 400m Dash with two PRs, by Dana Edwards and Sadia Yansenah, coming out of that event. Toomer narrowly missed her PR in the 100m Hurdles and Felton had a solid performance in the Long Jump with a distance of 5.84m (19’2.00”) for seventh place. The wind-aided mark, however, cannot be considered a personal best.
Elon Competes at Joe Hilton InvitationalCHAPEL HILL, N.C. – The distance members of the Elon women’s track and field team saw a number of new personal-bests and top performances as the Phoenix competed at the Joe Hilton Invitational on Saturday, April 12, at the Irwin Belk Track at Fetzer Field.
Freshman Kimberly Johansen clocked in a time of 2:12.11 in the 800-meters, setting a new outdoor personal-best and becoming the third fastest performer in the event in school history while finishing third overall. Senior Jackie Madden was sixth in the race with her personal-best time of 2:15.74.
Sophomore Tereza Novotna broke into the top-five all-time in the 1,500-meters with a time of 4:36.46 while en route in the one-mile race. Novotna finished overall time of 4:58.58 in the one-mile run.
Freshman Elyse Bierut was third overall in the 3,000-meters with a time of 10:10.46, becoming the third-fastest performer in school history. She was joined in the top-five on the all-time performance list by fellow freshman Shelby Cuddeback, who ran a time of 10:15.78.
Elon also had members of its men’s cross country team also compete on Saturday. Luis Vargas set a new men’s outdoor record time in the 1,500-meters clocking in at 3:49.66, also en route in the one-mile race. Vargas finished the one-mile run with a time of 4:08.04. Ari Rothschild finished with a time of 8:48.06 in the 3,000-meter, the second fastest performance on the men’s outdoor list.
