East Carolina 4, Elon 1

ELON, N.C. – The 44th-ranked Elon University men's tennis team dropped its regular season finale to East Carolina, 4-1, on Saturday, April 12, at the Jimmy Powell Tennis Center. The Pirates snapped the Phoenix's twelve-match unbeaten streak, handing the maroon and gold its first loss since Feb. 24. Elon moves to 16-4 on the year, while ECU improves to 17-6.
 
The Pirates started off strong by winning the doubles point to take an early 1-0 lead. Elon managed to claim a win in one of three doubles matches, as Brian Kowalski and Robert Lindgren topped Fredric Lehfeldt and Mario Martinez, 8-5.
 
Cameron Silverman, ranked 35th in the nation, found himself in a battle of arguably the nation's top two mid-major players, squaring off with ECU's 30th-ranked Joran Vliegen. After dropping the first set, 6-4, Silverman bounced back in set number two, winning 6-2 to gain momentum. However, Vliegen managed to bounce back from the second-set loss to win it in the third, 6-2, and seal the 4-1 win for the Pirates.
 
Elon's lone point on the day came courtesy of Stefan Fortmann, who won 6-3, 6-1, at the No. 2 singles position versus Martinez. Fortmann has won 12 straight and improves to 13-7 on the year with the win.
 
Elon led in the third set in two of the unfinished matches on the day featuring Jordan Kaufman and Ismael Sanchez Delfin, but the match was called following ECU's clinch at the No. 1 position.
 
Lindgren dropped a hard fought decision at No. 3 to Damien Bernard, 7-5, 6-3, while Kowalski was forced to retire after a 6-4 setback in the first set at No. 4 versus Nicolas Soriano.
