GREENVILLE, S.C. – The Furman men’s tennis team concluded the 2014 regular season Friday with a 7-0 victory over Wofford at the Mickel Tennis Center in Greenville, S.C. The Paladins honored the team’s four seniors, Alex Christ, Nate Collins, Joel Cook, and Sven Ivankovic, in the final regular season match of their careers.
The Paladins won two out of three doubles matches to clinch the opening point. Senior Joel Cook and sophomore Matt Browne downed Rob Galloway and Haris Poric, 8-5, in the top doubles contest, then junior Jacob Behal and freshman Adam Steryous teamed up for an 8-7 win over Walker Heffron and Parks Thompson at flight two. In the number three match-up, Wofford’s Jackson Keith and David Sklar posted an 8-7 advantage versus senior Alex Christ and sophomore Ben Horst.
In singles action, Furman came from behind to win the top two matches in tiebreakers. Steryous defeated Galloway, 1-6, 6-4, 1-0, at flight one, and Browne topped Poric, 4-6, 7-6, 1-0 at number two. At flight three, junior Luke Synn posted a 6-3, 6-2 victory against Heffron, and Cook downed Jackson Keith, 6-0, 6-2, at number four. Freshman Juan Sheppard bested Thompson, 6-1, 6-4, at flight five, then Horst held on to beat Graham Duncan, 6-2, 4-6, 7-6 in the number six contest.
UNCG 7, The Citadel 0
CHARLESTON, S.C. - The UNCG men’s tennis team secured the No. 3 seed in next week’s Southern Conference tournament with a sweep of The Citadel Friday afternoon.
With the win, the Spartans improve to 13-6 overall and 6-2 in the SoCon.
The Spartans went up 1-0 early after sweeping the doubles matches. Ahmet Sarioglu and James Dougherty defeated Elliott Sperr and Dillon Berkabile at No. 1 doubles 8-5. At No. 2 doubles, Daniel Mack and Cameron Smith took down Peter Bleach and Jackson Pride 8-4. An 8-1 win at No. 3 doubles by Gaston Murray and Jimmy Roueche over Oliver Dedding and Connor Grady secured the sweep for UNCG.
At No. 4 singles, Mack downed Pride 6-0, 6-1 to give UNCG a 2-0 advantage.
Smith beat Dedding 6-2, 6-1 at No. 5 singles. Roueche defeated Grady 6-4, 6-2 at No. 6 singles.
Sarioglu earned UNCG another point with a 6-1, 7-5 win over Sperr at No. 1 singles.
At No. 2 singles, Dougherty defeated Berkabile 6-3, 7-6 (7-3). Dougherty won the second set tiebreaker 7-3 to earn the victory.
The No. 3 singles set was the lone match to require three sets. Murray took set one 6-2, but Bleach bounced back to take set two 6-3. Murray completed the sweep for the Spartans with a 6-3 set three win.
