SPARTANBURG, S.C. – The 2014 Southern Conference Women’s Golf Championship will be played Sunday through Tuesday on the Moss Creek Golf Club’s North Course in Hilton Head Island, S.C.
This year will be the sixth straight for the tournament at Moss Creek. The course will play at par-72 and 5,941 yards.
Chattanooga will be seeking its fifth consecutive title after beating runner-up Furman by six strokes in 2013. The Mocs posted a team score of 895 (297-300-298), the second-lowest 54-hole mark in tournament history.
The Mocs will also be seeking their fourth straight individual medalist. Agathe Sauzon won the title in a sudden-death playoff with former SoCon member College of Charleston’s Mary Chandler Bryan last year, birdieing the first playoff hole to secure the win. Sauzon, then a sophomore, shot a 2-over-par 218 (75-71-72) to become Chattanooga’s third consecutive SoCon winner.
Sauzon will be joined in the field this year by teammate and 2012 champion Jordan Britt. Britt is the highest-ranked SoCon golfer nationally at No. 133.
Furman has won the event 13 times, most recently in 2009, the first year the event was played at Moss Creek. In addition to Chattanooga’s four straight wins, Western Carolina won in 2003 and 2007 and College of Charleston won in 2006. The Paladins have produced a league-best 13 individual medalists.
Chattanooga is ranked No. 68 in the latest Golfstat rankings, while Furman brings a No. 83 ranking into the weekend. Samford is No. 95 and Western Carolina No. 99 to give the league four top-100 teams.
The winner of the SoCon Championship will earn the league’s automatic bid to the NCAA regionals.
The tournament tees off at 8 a.m. Sunday. Live stats can be found at http://www.golfstatresults.com/public/indexh.cfm?tournament_id=4680.
