It was the ninth top-10 finish for the Catamounts in 2013-14 season.
Playing conditions on Monday were far better than the blustery weather the squads were greeted with in Sunday’s opening round. Swindell tallied her sixth top-10 finish of season, while the sixth-place finish was the career-best for Landino, one spot better than her previous career benchmark set earlier this spring at the UNF Intercollegiate.
Tied for the individual lead after the opening round, Swindell duplicated her first round with a 5-over-par 77 on Monday to slip into the three-way tie for sixth place with a 36-hole score of 154. Rounding out the scoring five for the Catamounts was sophomore Taylor Allison, who was five strokes better in the second round, shooting 78 for a two-day score of 161. True freshman Ashley Thompson was nine strokes ahead of her opening round with a second-day 77 to finish tied for 28th in the final standings.
Playing unattached as individuals, WCU sophomore Mariah Hopkins finished tied for 28th at 163 (84-79), while freshman Bethany Galloway placed in a tie for 52nd overall at 171 (89-82).
With three individuals headlining the top four golfers, first-round leader High Point carried the event by 17 strokes over the second-place Catamounts, 610-627. The Catamounts edged third-place Winthrop by a stroke at 628, with Gardner-Webb (632) and Bethune-Cookman (633) rounding out the top five.
Other Southern Conference schools in the standings included Wofford (650) in seventh place, host Appalachian State (662) in 10th and The Citadel (688) in 11th.
HPU’s Grier Bennett, who was among the six-way tie for the top spot after the opening round, held on to claim individual medalist honors after posting a 1-over-par 73 on Monday. Bennett finished with a 6-over-par 150 and was two strokes ahead of a three-way tie for second including her teammates Sarah Bae and Casey Ward, as well as Bethune-Cookman’s Patrizia Trevisan.
Western Carolina now turns its attention to the 2014 Southern Conference Women’s Golf Championship to be held April 13-15 at the Moss Creek Golf Club in Hilton Head, S.C. Led by a seventh-place tie by Allison in her freshman season, the Catamounts look to build upon a ninth-place finish from the 2013 event. WCU has twice claimed the conference tournament championship, winning the championship event in both 2003 and 2007.
