Wofford 4, Western Carolina 3
CULLOWHEE, N.C. – Freshman Kalli Karas clinched the match as the Wofford women's tennis team defeated the Catamounts of Western Carolina, 4-3, in its Southern Conference opener Saturday afternoon.
With the win, the Terriers improve to 5-4 overall and 1-0 in the Southern Conference and the Catamounts fall to 0-7-1 and 0-2 in Southern Conference play.
In doubles play, the Terriers gained an early 1-0 advantage sweeping the doubles point. No. 2 duo of freshman Catherine Martin and sophomore Mareli Sanchez clinched the point winning, 8-4, against Betiol and MaGuire.
In singles play, Karas clinched the match for Wofford as she defeated McLinden, 6-2, 6-0, giving them a 4-0 lead.
Chattanooga 7, Georgia Southern 0
CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. - The University of Tennessee at Chattanooga women’s tennis team won its conference opener against Georgia Southern in a 7-0 shutout at the Champions Club today. The Mocs are on a five match winning streak with an overall 9-2 record for the season.
Chattanooga controlled the courts all day with three doubles wins and six singles wins for a dominating conference premiere. It was the first win in a SoCon opener for the Mocs since 2002.
Sophomore Katie Polk found the strength to battle back at number six singles against Smith. After losing five consecutive games, Polk won seven in a row to win the set and only gave up one more in the second set for the (7-5, 6-1) victory.
Junior Kaylene Chadwell was able to make up for her loss on the road last year when she defeated Klein (6-1, 6-4).
With this win over Georgia Southern, Chattanooga’s women’s tennis team now has five shutout wins at home for the season along with an undefeated home stand.
UNCG 4, Stetson 3
DELAND, Fla. – The UNCG women’s tennis team tried to rally from 2-0 down but fell just short to Stetson, 4-3, Saturday afternoon at the Mandy Stoll Tennis Center.
UNCG falls to 3-5 on the season and Stetson improves to 8-1.
The Spartans fell behind 1-0 after losing the doubles point after Stetson won two of the three matches. At No. 3 doubles, Eveline Lepinay and Lindsey Cable defeated Stephanie Falcon and Soumeya Anane, 8-2. The Hatters clinched the point with an 8-4 victory at No. 1 doubles from Diana Bukajeva and Isabella Fernandez over Devon Sutherland and Kayla Gammie.
In the final doubles match at No. 2 doubles, senior Dilara Yurtkuran and Yasmin Franco took down Maya Blue Stauffer-MacDowell and Cari Berry, 8-5.
In singles, Bukajeva gave Stetson a 2-0 lead after defeating Anane, 6-0, 6-2 at No. 1 singles. Gammie cut the lead to 2-1 after defeating Fernandez in straight sets, 6-0, 6-3, at No. 3 singles.
At No. 5 singles, Berry won in straight sets against sophomore Jamie Grinbert, 6-1, 6-4.
Franco gave the Spartans their second point with an easy victory at No. 4 singles against Stauffer-MacDowell, 6-1, 6-0.
In the final two matches, both went the distance as Carolina Meregalli clinched the victory for Stetson with a 6-0, 3-6, 6-1 win against Sutherland at No. 6 singles. Falcon was able to win her match at No. 2 singles, 7-5, 2-6, 6-1 against Andrea Crespo.
Winthrop 7, Davidson 0
ROCK HILL, S.C. — The Davidson women’s tennis team fell in its matchup vs. their state-border rival Winthrop, dropping a 7-0 decision Saturday morning at the Eagle Tennis Center.
The Wildcats fell to 5-9 overall, while the Eagles reached .500 for the first time this year with a 3-3 mark.
The match started off with Winthrop taking all three doubles spots by the score of 8-2, 8-2 and 8-0.
Winthrop finished off with win with five straight-set wins in singles. Brites Moniz-Soares nearly scored a team point for Davidson by forcing a third set at No. 1. Since the match had been decided, she and her opponent Andressa Garcia went to a super tie-breaker, with Garcia pulling out a 10-5 decision. Moniz-Soares also fell in a first-set tie-breaker, 7-4, but came back for 6-1 win in the second set.
The Wildcats conclude their six-match road trip by opening Southern Conference play at Wofford Sunday with a 1 p.m. match.
