Furman tied for 14th at Darius Rucker Intercollegiate
HILTON HEAD ISLAND, S.C. – Sophomore Stephanie Carlozzi (+2) fired a 73 to tie for 14th place to lead the Furman women’s golf team Friday in the first day of the Darius Rucker Intercollegiate at the par-71, 6,142 yard Long Cove Course.
Carlozzi registered back-to-back birdies on No. 4 and No. 5 to make the turn at 1-under then parred eight holes on the back nine to finish the day at 2-over, just six strokes back of fourth-ranked Stephanie Meadow of Alabama, who led the field after shooting a 4-under 67 in the opening round.
Paladin freshman Taylor Totland (+3) carded a 74 in Friday’s first round, finishing just one stroke back of Carlozzi, after birdieing No. 7 and No. 15 to finish the day tied for 22nd. Sophomore Valentina Romero (+9), who registered at birdie on No. 12, and senior Aubrie Street (+9) each shot an 80 to tie for 72nd on Friday, while freshman Macy McRaney (+12) concluded the tournament’s first round in a tie for 80th.
No. 3 Duke (E) leads the field with an even 284, nine strokes ahead of No. 14 Vanderbilt (+9) and No. 8 Alabama (+9) who are tied at 293 after 18 holes of play. No. 13 South Carolina (+10) is fourth with a 10-over 294, while No. 29 North Carolina completes the top five at +11 entering Saturday’s second round. The Paladins (+23) are tied for 14th with No. 24 Kentucky after one day of competition.
Second-round play of the 54-hole tournament, which features 12 teams ranked in the top 25 in the latest Golfstat rankings, begins Saturday at 8 a.m. The tournament will conclude on Sunday.
The Paladins will tee off Saturday beginning at 8:45 a.m. from hole number 10.
