Hurt Named NCEL Student-Athlete of the Week

SPARTANBURG, S.C. – Tripp Hurt, a junior cross-country and track and field runner at Furman, has been named the North Carolina Education Lottery Student-Athlete of the Week for March 5, the league office announced Wednesday.

Hurt is a junior physiscs major from Bogart, Ga., and holds a 3.48 GPA. He won both the 3,000-meters and the 5,000-meters, setting a new school record in the 3,000, to lead the Furman indoor track and field teams this weekend at the Southern Conference Championship Meet Sunday at the JDL Fast Track in Winston-Salem, N.C.

Hurt, who won the 5,000m Sunday with a time of 14:30.76, became the first Furman men's track and field athlete to win two events at the Southern Conference Indoor Championships since Bill Dimitrouleas claimed the league championship in both the 35-lb weight and the shot put in 1973.

On Saturday, Hurt won the 3,000m, setting a new Furman record with a time of 8:18.06, breaking the old record of 8:20.40, set by Wilkerson Given in 2011.

Also nominated for NCEL Student-Athlete of the Week were Davidson women's basketball player Shannon Eriksson and Western Carolina baseball player Bradley Strong.
