UNCG?s Buchanan Named Women?s Golfer of the Week

SPARTANBURG, S.C. – UNCG sophomore Sammie Buchanan has been named the Southern Conference women’s golfer of the week for all competition from Feb. 26 to March 4. The selection is made by the league office.

Buchanan finished third in the 36-team, 192-golfer field at the Kiawah Island Classic, dubbed the “largest collegiate golf tournament in the country.” Buchanan was just one shot out of first place.

The Bluffton, S.C., native turned in a 5-over 221 over the course of the three-day tournament, which was played at Oak Point Golf Club and Cougar Point. Buchanan shot a 2-under 70 in the first round and followed that up with an even-par 72 in round two to hold the 36-hole lead. She finished with a 7-over 79 on Tuesday in tough weather conditions that saw just four golfers in the field finish under par for the day.

Buchanan was the top SoCon golfer in the field, which also included The Citadel, Elon, Samford and Chattanooga. Her third-place showing bettered her previous career best by eight spots.

UNCG returns to action March 14-16 at the JMU/Eagle Landing Invitational at the Eagle Landing Golf Club in Orange Park, Fla.

Also nominated: Eraina Manor (The Citadel), Bailey Gray (Samford) and Emily McLennan (Chattanooga).
