MIAMI SHORES, Fla. — Finishing out its last day in the state of Florida, the Wildcat women’s tennis team split a doubleheader Tuesday as they took a 4-1 decision against Detroit in the morning, before falling 6-1 to Xavier in the afternoon match at the Buccaneer Tennis Center.

Davidson finished its trip down south with a 1-3 mark to run its record to 5-8 overall.

In the morning vs. the Titans (5-4), Davidson regrouped after dropping two doubles matches 8-1, 8-3, to score singles wins at No. 1, 2, 3 and 6 (by default) to capture the win.

Brites Moniz-Soares cruised to her seventh win at No. 1 with a 6-0, 6-1 victory. She was followed by Elaina Cummer (6-7 on season) with a 6-1, 7-5 triumph at No. 2 and Nisha Crouser with a solid 6-4, 6-1 win at No. 3. The senior moved her record to 5-7, with all five wins coming at No. 3.

Though they scored just one team point in the afternoon, the ‘Cats battled well against the Musketeers (8-2). They first pushed two of the doubles matches to a tie-breaker. At No. 1, the duo of Moniz-Soares and Cummer fell 7-2 in the tie-breaker to fall 8-7 in the match and then the pair of Crouser and Jenna Brunner dropped a 7-0 decision in their tie-breaker at No 2 to give Xavier the first team point.

Brunner’s hard effort in doubles though carried over to singles, and the first-year player won her fourth straight match. She pulled out a 6-3, 7-5 win at No. 5 to run her record to a team-best 8-4 on the year.

Moniz-Soares forced a super tie-breaker in her match at No. 1, but fell in a close battle to the end, 11-9. She and Alex Brinker split their first two sets, 1-6, 6-3.

Tamara Hill and Sarah Stein also played twice during the day in singles. Hill won her match by default in the morning vs. Detroit, but dropped a 6-2, 6-3 decision at No. 6 singles later. Stein’s morning match went unfinished and the freshman then fell 6-3, 6-2 to Xavier’s Daniella Patton at No. 4 in the afternoon.
