SPARTANBURG, S.C. – UNCG’s Katelyn Bedwell and Samford’s Mollie Hanson have been named the Southern Conference Softball Player and Pitcher of the Week, respectively, the league announced Monday. The selections are made by the Southern Conference office.

Bedwell earns Player of the Week honors after hitting .429 with six RBIs and a pair of home runs in four games for UNCG last week. She started her week with a three-hit game against North Carolina A&T, picking up an RBI and scoring a run in a Spartan win. She went 1-for-3 in the first game of a three-game series against Chattanooga. In the third game of the series, Bedwell blasted a pair of home runs and totaled five RBIs, including a walk-off two-run homer to clinch a 12-10 win.

Hanson was selected as the Pitcher of the Week after allowing only one earned run in 19 innings pitched last week. Hanson tossed four innings against Mississippi State, giving up just one earned run in her appearance. Hanson then threw a two-hit complete game against Appalachian State, striking out six with no walks. In the second game of the series, she came on in one inning of relief to strike out two and pick up a win in the 2-1 Bulldog victory. She closed her weekend with another two-hit shutout against App, adding five more strikeouts in the win. She finished with 13 strikeouts while allowing just two walks and three total runs scored in 19 innings. Her three wins moved her to 15 wins on the season.

Also nominated for Pitcher of the Week: Appalachian State’s Alissa Schoelkopf, Georgia Southern’s Sarah Purvis and Chattanooga’s Katie Henderson.
