Western Carolina second at Mimosa Hills Intercollegiate
MORGANTON, N.C. – Western Carolina redshirt sophomore Kristin Swindell sits among a six-way tie for first place after 18 of the scheduled 36 holes at the Mimosa Hills Intercollegiate, hosted by Appalachian State at the par-72, 6,010-yard Mimosa Hills Golf and Country Club. With three golfers inside the individual top 20, the Catamounts are in second place after turning in a team round of 321 on Sunday.
Blustery conditions in Morganton made things very difficult on Sunday. Steady winds around 25-to-30 mph with gusts up to 40 mph nearly forced the postponement of the opening round. Teams will tee off in the second and final round on Monday morning with a 9 a.m. shotgun start.
Swindell, one event removed from her first collegiate individual medalist honors, posted a 5-over-par 77 on a windy day in the foothills to match five other golfers for the best round. Freshman Olivia Landino is tied for 12th overall after shooting 8-over-par 80, with sophomore Kim Mitchell in a tie for 19th place with an opening-round 81.
Rounding out WCU's scoring five is sophomore Taylor Allison (83) in a tie for 28th and freshman Ashley Thompson (86) in a tie for 46th overall.
Playing unattached as individuals, WCU sophomore Mariah Hopkins is tied for 38th overall after shooting 84 on Sunday with freshman Bethany Galloway in a tie for 55th at 89.
High Point carded a team score of 313 on Sunday to lead the 13-team field, eight strokes ahead of the second-place Catamounts. Gardner-Webb is third, one stroke behind WCU at 322, with Bethune-Cookman (323) and Winthrop (325) rounding out the top five.
Among the other Southern Conference schools in the field, Wofford sits in sixth place at 330 with host Appalachian State (338) in 10th and The Citadel in 11th after shooting 346.
Wofford sixth at Mimosa Hills Intercollegiate
MORGANTON, N.C. – The Wofford College women's golf team opened the Mimosa Hills Intercollegiate with a 42-over-par 330 on Sunday at the Mimosa Hills Golf and Country Club.
Conditions were tough in the mountains of western North Carolina. High Point carded the best team score of 25-over 313 to lead the 13-team field. The low individual round was a 5-over 77, carded by High Point's Sarah Bae and Grier Bennett, Western Carolina's Kristin Swindell, Gardner-Webb's Julia Henderson, Appalachian State's Haley Zagoria and South Carolina State's Tiana Jones.
Leading the Terriers was sophomore Maegan Higgins, posting an 8-over 80 to sit tied for 12th place, just three strokes back of the lead. Freshman Allyson Markiewicz carded a 9-over 81 and is tied for 19th. Junior Lauren Dunbar is in 28th with an 11-over 83, senior Anne Marie Covar is in 46th at 14-over 86 and freshman Katy Funk rounds out the Terriers in 58th at 18-over 90.
Also competing as an individual is Wofford junior Elizabeth Thompson. She matched Funk's first-round 90.
Overall, 78 players are competing in the two-day, 36-hole tournament.
The final round of the Mimosa Hills Intercollegiate tees off with a shotgun start on Monday at 9 a.m.
Appalachian State 10th at Mimosa Hills Intercollegiate
MORGANTON, N.C. – Junior Haley Zagoria fired a 5-over-par 77 to lead the defending champion Appalachian State in the first round of the Mimosa Hills Intercollegiate at the par-72, 6,010-yard Mimosa Hills Golf and Country Club.
Zagoria is currently tied with Sarah Bae and Grier Bennett of High Point, Kristin Swindell of Western Carolina, Tiana Jones of South Carolina State and Juilia Henderson of Gardner-Webb for the top individual score.
High Point grabbed the first-round lead with a 25-over-par 313, leading second-place Western Carolina by eight strokes and third-place Gardner-Webb by nine strokes. Appalachian fired a 50-over-par 338 as a team and sits in 10th place out of 13 schools.
A cold and windy day in Morganton tested all golfers as the course averages were higher than last year's tournament.
Freshman Emily Stinson shot a 12-over-par 84 to tie for 38th place, while freshman Hannah Craver tied for 42nd, carding a 13-over-par 85. Rounding out the starting five, sophomores Yuxuan Li and Lily Yatawara are tied for 65th place, both carding 20-over-par 92s.
Individually, freshman Madalyn Davis is tied for 12th place finishing with an 8-over-par 80 to lead all individuals in the tournament. Freshman Wenjia Cao, finished the first round with a 15-over-par 87 and is currently tied for 50th place.
The second and final round will start on Monday with a 9 a.m. shotgun time.
Elon sixth at John Kirk Panther Intercollegiate
STOCKBRIDGE, Ga. – Battling cool conditions, the Elon women's golf team finished the first day of the John Kirk/Panther Intercollegiate in sixth place with a mark of 308.
The Phoenix was paced by Kelsey Badmaev, who ended the first round in a tie for ninth out of 90 players with a 75. Badmaev began her round on the back nine, where she was 2-over. After the turn, she would post two birdies on her way to finishing 3-over-par.
Just one stroke back with a 76 in a tie for 16th was Kathryn Buckingham. Buckingham posted a par on 14 of her 18 holes during round one.
Sunna Vidisdottir's round of 77 has her in a tie for 22nd with 36 holes to play. She posted four birdies over her first 18 holes.
After carding an 80 on Sunday, Katie Partridge sits in a tie for 41st. Partridge had one birdie.
Finally, Emily Brooks shot an 81 and will begin Monday's second round in a tie for 51st.
Georgia's Amira Alexander, playing as an individual, led the field after one round. Alexander carded a 1-under 71 on Sunday.
Host Georgia State leads the 16-team field with a score of 300. Campbell and Troy are tied for second at 304. Kennesaw State (305) and Old Dominion (307) round out the top five.
UNCG finishes 18th at Bryan National Collegiate
GREENSBORO, N.C. – The UNCG women’s golf team wrapped up the annual Bryan National Collegiate Sunday, co-hosted by the Spartans and Wake Forest, in windy conditions at the Bryan Park Champions Course. The third and final round was play in winds that exceeded 30 mph at times, leading to higher scores across the board.
The field included co-hosts UNCG and No. 19 Wake Forest along with No. 3 Duke, No. 8 South Carolina, No. 13 Clemson, No. 17 Northwestern, No. 18 Florida, No. 22 Michigan State, No. 23 NC State, No. 26 Ohio State, No. 27 North Carolina, Virginia, Louisville, Florida State, Tennessee, College of Charleston, Penn State and UNCW.
The Spartans as a team finished in 18th place with a score of 1,011, while No. 3 Duke led wire-to-wire with an 882 score, besting South Carolina by 21 strokes (903). Celine Boutier of Duke won the individual honors with an even-par 216 (72-71-73) as her final-round score of 1-over-par was the best round of the day. Boutier held off Ashlan Ramsey of Clemson for the individual title, as Ramsey finished 1-over-par 217 (72-71-74).
Junior Berglind Bjornsdottir was the Spartans’ top finisher in 82nd place with a 54-hole score of 240 (79-80-81). Sophomore Sammie Buchanan was the second finisher with a 247 (74-82-91). Freshman Kristin Powers withdrew from the final two rounds due to an injury so UNCG was down to just four golfers, meaning all four scores had to count on the team total.
