Wofford 5, Chattanooga 2
CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. – Parks Thompson clinched the match on the fifth court as the Wofford men’s tennis team defeated the Mocs of Chattanooga, 5-2, Saturday afternoon at the Baylor Indoor Tennis Courts. Thompson defeated Austin Boaz in straight sets to clinch the win.
The Terriers improve to 8-8 overall and 3-2 in the Southern Conference with the victory and the Mocs fall to 5-9 overall and 1-4 in conference play.
In doubles, Rob Galloway and Haris Poric got things started on the top court as they defeated John Peacy and Jorge Varon, 8-4, to win the first doubles match. Wofford then clinched the doubles point on the third court as David Sklar and Jackson Keith defeated Boaz and Derrick Brown, 8-6, giving the Terriers a 1-0 advantage. Walker Heffron and Parks Thompson then finished off the sweep as they upended Luke Saunders and Pavels Grigorjevs in the tight match 8-7 (7-4).
Poric got things started in singles defeating Varon, 6-2, 6-3, to give the Terriers a 2-0 lead. Galloway then extended Wofford’s lead, 3-0, as he defeated Grigorjevs in three sets, 6-0, 2-6, 6-3.
Chattanooga then brought the match within one at 3-2 winning two straight singles points. Saunders rallied to defeat Heffron in three sets, 3-6, 6-4, 6-4, and Gino Delavalle also had to make a comeback has he defeated Keith, 6-7, 6-3, 6-3.
Thompson then clinched the match for the Terriers against Boaz. He won in two sets 6-3, 6-4, to give Wofford a 4-2 advantage. Graham Duncan made his first appearance of the season on the sixth court and earned the team’s fifth point beating Brown, 7-6 (7-5), 6-1.
Appalachian State 7, The Citadel 0
BOONE, N.C. – Appalachian State University men’s tennis rolled to a 7-0 win over The Citadel in a Southern Conference contest on Saturday at Deer Valley Racquet Club.
The Mountaineers (7-8, 4-0 SoCon) remained perfect in league play and improved to 3-0 at home on the season while the Bulldogs (2-24, 0-6) lost for the 18th-straight time.
Appalachian set the tone early with a dominant performance in doubles play. The No. 1 team of Sebastien King/Zach Bost picked up an 8-3 win while the No. 2 tandem of Oliver Casey/Daniel Hoang cruised to an 8-1 win. The Mountaineers’ No. 3 duo of Steve Lake/Jack Maddocks shut out its opponent with an 8-0 win.
The momentum rolled over into singles play as King grabbed a win at No. 1 (6-4, 6-4) and Casey once again won at No. 2 (6-3, 7-6). Hoang also won it straight sets at No. 3 (6-1, 6-2) while Maddocks won 61, 6-2 at No. 5 and Jan-Willem Kleynhans scored a win at No. 6 (6-2, 6-0). Bost went to three sets against his opponent at No.4 and prevailed by a final of 2-6, 6-4, 6-3.
