SPARTANBURG, S.C. – Elon senior Jordan Johnston has been named the Southern Conference Women’s Tennis Player of the Week for all matches played March 17-23. Johnston went 3-1 in all competition last week as the Phoenix narrowly fell to Furman (4-3) before sweeping Wofford.
Johnston won both of her singles matches at the No. 1 position for Elon last week. The Snellville, Ga., native rallied for a three-set win over Furman’s Ansley Speaks (6-7, 6-1, 6-2) to start the week before posting a three-set victory over Wofford’s Sarah Evans (3-6, 6-0, 6-1). With a pair of wins at No. 1 last week, Johnston has now won nine of her last 10 singles matches at the top spot for Elon.
Paired with Barbora Lazarova at No. 1 doubles, the Elon duo split a pair of matches last week. After falling to Furman’s Alex Moreno-Kaste and Katherine Oudin (8-5), the top pair for the Phoenix raced past Wofford’s Evans and Julia Paulson, 8-1. Johnston and Lazarova have now won five of their last seven together in doubles play.
Other top performers in the Southern Conference included Appalachian State’s Gabrielle Wreder, Davidson’s Elaina Cummer, Furman’s Ansley Speaks, Georgia Southern’s Paola Garrido, Chattanooga’s Alexa Flynn and Western Carolina’s Stacia Kissell.
