Samford Competes at John Mitchell Relays
TUSCALOOSA, Ala. - The Samford University men's and women's track team posted record breaking finishes at the John Mitchell Alabama Relays hosted by the University of Alabama at the Sam Bailey Track and Field Stadium.

Emily Allen highlighted the women's efforts in the meet with a school record and first place finish in the hammer throw with a throw of 59.72m. Allen broke her previous record of 56.77m set back in 2013.

Allen continued her record breaking streak in the long jump competition as she set a mark of 5.84m but that was until Nicole Charlie came in later to set a new record and take a fourth place finish with a leap of 5.92m.

Bulldog head coach Rod Tiffen likes the healthy competition between the two as the outdoor season moves forward.

Charley continued the record breaking streak when she posted a third place finish in the triple jump with a leap of 12.49m that broke the previous record set back in 2005 by April Powell.

Kimberly Ruch also posted an impressive seventh place finish in the women's 100m dash with a time of 12.26.

On the men's side of competition Brain Smith placed second in the schools record book and 17th in the event in the men's shot put with a 15.14m throw.

Brandon Bassett posted a personal best of 15.09 for a 12th place finish 110-meter hurdles.

 

Wofford Competes at Charlotte 49er Classic
CHARLOTTE, N.C. – Senior Sam Hughes and sophomore Alex Michaels set outdoor school records as the Wofford men’s and women’s track and field teams competed in the Charlotte 49er Classic this weekend for its opening meet of the outdoor season at the Irwin Belk Track.

Hughes led the way for the women as she set the school record in the 3K with a time of 10:19.72. The previous record was held by her as she set it last season with a time of 10:37.31.

In addition to Hughes, senior Alyssa Burkert finished fifth in the 800m as she crossed the finish line with a time of 2:12.25. Senior Katie Kessler also performed well as she cross the finish line at 2:17.92 for a 21st place finish in the 800m.

Leading the way for the men, Michaels had a solid performance in the 1500m as he set the school record and finished in 48th place with a time of 4:06.39. The previous record was held by Trey Parker who clocked a 4:08.19 1500m in 2010. The time Michaels ran places him 14th in the Southern Conference performance list in the 1500m.

In addition to Michaels, senior Hunter McGahee had a solid outing in the 3K as he crossed the finish line with a time of 9:11.17, which was good enough for a 21st place finish.

The Wofford men’s and women’s track and field teams will compete in their second outdoor meet of the season on Thursday, March 27 when they compete in the Winthrop Invitational in Rock Hill, South Carolina.

 

Georgia Southern Competes at FSU Relays
TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – Senior Dana Edwards, junior Jasmin Walker and the Eagles’ 4X400m Relay team posted times in their events Saturday at the FSU Relays that would rank them among the nation’s best. Dana Edwards ran a 1:01.13 to move up a spot on Georgia Southern’s all-time list for the 400 meter Hurdles to fourth. She also ran the lead leg on the Eagles’ 4x400m Relay that now ranks third-best all-time. Walker ran an 11.77 in the 100m Dash for fifth place in Tallahassee, tying her for third on Georgia Southern’s all-time performance chart.

Dana Edwards trimmed 1.7 seconds off her previous best in the 400m Hurdles as three Eagles placed in the top six in that event. Walker posted two personal bests on Saturday with her 11.77 in the 100m Dash in the 200m Dash where she finished seventh among collegians. That mark tied her for the fourth-best time in Georgia Southern history.

In the first test for the Eagles in this event this outdoor season, Dana Edwards, Sherril McFarlane, Kimberly Thomas and Asha Stegall closed the meet with a 3:42.40 in the 4X400m Relay. Today’s time was the first to crack the program’s top five since the record was set in 2007.

Georgia Southern finished the weekend with 24 individual personal bests, 12 on each day. The Eagles travel next to Jacksonville, Fla., for the UNF Spring Break Invitational Friday and Saturday, March 28-29.

 

Chattanooga Competes at Alabama Relays
TUSCALOOSA, Ala. --- The University of Tennessee at Chattanooga men’s and women’s Distance Medley Relay teams each finished second Saturday on the final day of the Alabama Relays at the Sam Bailey Track and Field Stadium.

The Men’s DMR finished second at the Relays with a time of 10:08.54. Patrick O’Brien led off the race with a 3:02.46 in the 1200 meter leg followed by DeQuantez Sandifer with a 49.07 in the 400. John Gilpin ran the 800 leg in a time of 1:57.27 while Lucas Cotter, making his first appearance this season, ran the 1600 meter anchor leg in a time of 4:19.76.

The women’s team was led off by Teghan Henderson who covered the 1200 meter distance in a time of 3:43.95. Maddison Melchionna ran the 400 meter leg in a time of 58.16 while Jessica York ran a time of 2:16.89 for the 800 leg. Kianna Howard anchored the race in the 1600 meter leg with a time of 4:50.57.

Iman Isang posted a 15.8 in the 110 meter hurdles while Rebecca Greenwall ran a 2:17.27 in the 800 and Chandler Rogers placed 25th in the event with a time of 2:20.35.

 

Elon Competes at Wake Forest Open
WINSTON-SALEM, N.C.  – First-place finishes and new personal outdoor records from senior Allyson Oram and sophomore Tereza Novotna highlighted a strong showing from members the Elon University women’s track and field distance squad at the Wake Forest Open on Friday, March 20, at Kentner Stadium.

Oram won the 1,500-meters with a new personal-best time of 4:32.89 in her first outdoor race of the season while teammate Johansen was third overall with a time of 4:34. Redshirt freshman Elyse Bierut had a time of 4.44.33 in her first collegiate outdoor race with the Phoenix. Oram’s time is the second fastest all-time on the program’s outdoor list.

Novotna captured individualist honors in the 3,000-meter steeplechase after she set a new personal-best in the event with a time of 10:41.41. In the women’s 400-meters, Jackie Madden had a solid outing after clocking a time of 58.84.

The Phoenix’s Kimberlyn Holt was the lone thrower that competed today for the maroon and gold. The senior threw in the hammer throw had a toss of 47.99m in the event.
