Elon 7, Wofford 0

ELON, N.C. – Looking to rebound from a tough loss yesterday, the Elon University women's tennis team swept the Wofford Terriers today, March 22, at the Jimmy Powell Tennis Center to snap a brief two-match losing streak.
 
After sweeping the doubles point in convincing fashion, Elon's roll continued in singles with Frida Jansakerclinching the match for the Phoenix on court No. 2 with a 6-1, 6-3 win over Audrey Coventry. She was followed less than one minute later by Barbora Lazarova, who earned a 6-1 6-4 win on court No. 3 against Julia Paulson.
 
Elon was paced in singles by Taylor Casey on court No. 6. The sophomore made quick work of Taylor Carlson, taking a 6-1, 6-0 victory. She was followed shortly after by Maria Camara Ruiz, who defeated Mareli Sanchez on court No. 5 to put Elon up 3-0.
 
Jordan Johnston and Bryn Khoury finished off the sweep for Elon with wins on court Nos. 1 and 4, respectively. Khoury got a battle from Catherine Martin, but ultimately claimed a 6-4, 6-3 victory. Johnston finished the day having to come from behind after dropping the first set. The senior recovered to sweep the second set, then took the third set in convincing fashion, 6-1.
 
Each of Elon's doubles pairings had little trouble winning to start the day. Jansaker and Camara Ruiz were first off the court on No. 2 with an 8-1 win over Martin and Sanchez. Johnston and Lazarova followed with the same 8-1 score on court No. 1. Khoury and Casey finished the doubles sweep with an 8-3 win on court No. 3 over Carlson and Kalli Karas.


Chattanooga 5, Appalachian State 1

CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. – Appalachian State University women’s tennis was unable to overcome a strong effort by Chattanooga, as it fell 5-1 in a Southern Conference match on Saturday at the UTC Tennis Courts.

The Mountaineers (4-13, 0-3 SoCon) dropped their sixth-straight match while the Mocs (12-2, 3-0) picked up their eighth-straight victory.

Chattanooga picked up straight-set wins in four of the five singles matches that were played, No. 5 singles was not played as the match had already been decided at that point.

Gabrielle Wreder came away with Appalachian’s lone win on the day as she picked up a thrilling victory at No. 4 singles. After falling by a 6-4 score in the first set, Wreder picked up a 6-2 win in the second set and hung on for a 12-10 victory in the decisive third set.

Appalachian’s best showing in double play came from the No. 2 team of Clare Cox/Megan Mullen, which suffered an 8-5 loss.


Furman 5, UNCG 2

GREENSBORO, N.C. – Furman improved to 2-0 in its first weekend of Southern Conference play, downing UNC Greensboro, 5-2, Saturday at the UNCG Tennis Courts in Greensboro, N.C.

The Paladins won the top two doubles matches to clinch the opening point.  Senior Katherine Oudin and junior Alex Moreno-Kaste teamed up for an 8-4 win over Devon Sutherland and Kayla Gammie at number one, while the freshman duo of Ansley Speaks and Blair Martin defeated Dilara Yurtkuran and Yasmin Franco, 8-5, at flight two.  The Spartans picked up the win at flight three, as Soumeya Anane and Stephanie Falcon beat senior Margaret Boyette and rookie Karlee Bryce, 8-7(5).

Furman collected three quick singles wins to clinch the match, as Speaks defeated Silara, 6-2, 6-2, in the top match-up, then junior Kelly Sullivan posted a 6-4, 6-1 advantage over Jamie Grinberg at number five.  Martin scored with a 6-1, 6-2 victory versus Ellis at flight six, 6-1, 6-2, pushing the Paladin advantage to 4-0, before the Spartans put two points on the board.

Falcon topped Oudin, 6-2, 6-3, at number three, then Gammie defeated Bryde, 4-6, 6-3, 1-0 (12-10) at flight five.  Moreno-Kaste held on for a hard-fought win at flight two in the final match of the day, beating Anane, 2-6, 7-6(2), 1-0 (10-8).


Georgia Southern 5, Davidson 2

STATESBORO, Ga. - Georgia Southern women's tennis defeated Davidson 5-2 this afternoon at the Wallis Tennis Center. The Eagles improve their record to 7-9 overall and 3-4 in the SoCon.

 The Eagles started off the match with two doubles wins. Giulia Riepe and Stephanie Woods defeated Nisha Crouser and Jenna Brunner, 8-1. Jordana Klein and Mary Phillips Smith overcame Tamara Hill Sarah Stein, 8-2. GSU had the 1-0 advantage entering into singles play.

 At No. 1 singles, Paola Garrido took down Brites Moniz-Soares 6-4, 7-6. Jordana Klein was defeated by Elaina Cummer 6-7,6-2, 10-8 in the No. 2 position. Daria Vasekina fell to Nisha Crouser, 7-6, 3-6, 6-3. Stephanie Woods notched the win in the No. 4 spot, beating Sarah Stein 6-2, 6-0. Giulia Riepe clinched the win against Jenna Brunner, 6-2, 6-7, 6-1. At No. 6 singles, Mary Phillips Smith defeated Tamara Hill, 6-4, 6-1.

 The Eagles return to action on Monday, March 24th against University of Akron at the Wallis Tennis Center.


Charlotte 4, Western Carolina 3

CHARLOTTE, N.C. – Stacia Kissell, Erin Maguire and Nicole Nielly all earned singles victories, but the Western Carolina women’s tennis team fell, 4-3, at Charlotte on Saturday afternoon at the Halton-Wagner Tennis Complex.

At the doubles competition, WCU's No. 3 pairing of Sara Ruiz Pajares and Maguire came up short to Lisa Grosselius and Briana Bodner, 8-4.  The 49ers clinched the doubles point with a victory at the No. 2 doubles match as Jessica Perez and Macy Vonderschmidt defeated the Catamounts Megan McLinden and Nielly, 8-7(6).

The No. 1 doubles match was stopped at 7-6 (40-0) as the Catamounts' Kissell and Shannon Bettiol were facing Victoria Pahlett and Natsuko Takayanagi of Charlotte.

In singles action, at the No. 2 position, Bettiol dropped her contest to Grosselius in straight sets, 6-2, 6-0.

Kissell pushed her winning streak to 10 straight in singles competition, defeating Pahlett in straight sets, 6-2, 6-1 in the No. 1 singles match.

Charlotte’s Vanderschmidt defeated WCU’s Ruiz in straight sets at the No. 4 singles match, 6-2, 6-2, Maguire found victory for the Catamounts, defeating Bodner in the No. 6 singles contest, 6-1, 6-2.

Charlotte clinched the match with a win at the No. 3 singles contest as Takayamagi defeated McLinden 6-1, 6-2.

In the final match of the day, Western Carolina's Nicole Nielly gained her first victory on the season, defeating Perez, 4-6, 6-4, 10-6.

Western Carolina hits the courts again on Tuesday, March 25, as they play host to Furman at 2 p.m.
