SPARTANBURG, S.C. – Elon junior Barbora Lazarova has been named the Southern Conference Women’s Tennis Player of the Week for all matches played March 10-16. Lazarova was 5-1 in all competition last week as the Phoenix earned victories over Gardner-Webb (6-1) and Davidson (7-0) before falling to Wake Forest (6-1).

Lazarova won three straight-sets matches for the Phoenix last week as she cruised past Gardner-Webb’s Jenny Lunde, 6-0, 6-0 at the No. 2 position.  After moving to the No. 3 spot in the lineup, Lazarova topped Davidson’s Nisha Crouser (6-1, 6-2) and gave the Phoenix its only point of the match against Wake Forest with a 6-2, 6-4 victory over Samantha Asch.  The Bratislava, Slovakia, native has now won her last eight singles matches and has only been pushed past the second set once during that streak.

The junior teamed with Jordan Johnston at No. 1 doubles for Elon and the pair went 2-1 last week.  Lazarova and Johnston raced past Gardner-Webb’s Yasmin Doost and Ronia Hutterli, 8-5, and claimed an 8-6 win over Davidson’s Elaina Cummer and Brites Moniz-Soares.  Lazarova and Johnston lost a close match to Wake Forest’s Xue Zhang and Kasey Gardiner, 8-7 (7-3).

Other top performers in the Southern Conference included Furman’s Ansley Speaks, Georgia Southern’s Giulia Riepe, Samford’s Kristin Lewis, Chattanooga’s Kaylene Chadwell and Western Carolina’s Stacia Kissell.
