Chattanooga Competes at USF Invitational
TAMPA, Fla. --- University of Tennessee at Chattanooga freshman Maddison Melchionna claimed the top spot in the USF Invitational women’s 800 meter run in her first collegiate track meet while senior Nathan Wanuch finished second in the men’s 3000 meter Steeplechase.

Melchionna finished the race with a time of 2:13.75 followed by classmate Jessica York who placed third with a time of 2:17.34 edging out sophomore Rebecca Greenwall who was fourth with a time of 2:17.48.

In the men’s 3000 meter Steeplechase, Wanuch was second with a time of 9:30.89 in the season opener.

The weather, while good for running, was not just right in the men’s triple jump. James Stovall scratched his two good jumps and finished sixth with a distance of 44-10.75

In the men’s 1500 meter run, senior Mark Cole finished second in his heat with a time of 4:06.14 to place sixth overall. Senior John Gilpin finished third in the same heat with a time of 4:08.02 for 11th overall. Sophomore Paul Stuart ran the fast heat and finished ninth overall with a time of 4:07.51. Sophomore Marquis Carter who normally runs the shorter races, finished 18th overall in the 1500m with a time of 4:10.21.

Sophomore Iman Isang finished ninth in the men’s 110 meter Hurdles with a time of 15.68 and ran a PR in the 100 meter Dash with a time of 11.40, besting his previous time of 11.53 set last season at the Western Carolina Catamount Classic.

 

Samford Competes at Battle of I-65
MOBILE, Ala. – The Samford University track and field team took part in the Battle of I-65, its first outdoor meet of the season and took second place in both the men's and women's team scores.

The women tallied 68 points, just six points behind the University of South Alabama while the men totaled 40 points as compared to USA's 107 point total.

The women made a push in the field events to close down USA's point total. Emily Allen posted first place finishes in the triple jump (12.29m) and hammer throw (58.19m).

Nicole Charley nabbed a first place finish in the long jump (5.75m) while Katelyn Poole took the top-spot in the shot put competition (12.89m).

Aerial Horton and Morgan Johnson posted second place finishes in the discus throw (42.32m) and the pole vault (3.66m) respectively.

In the track events Lauren D'Alessio placed first in the 800-meter run with a time of 2:15.44 and fellow Bulldog Anna Laura Irvine came in first with a time of 5:00.80 in the mile run. Ansley Bos placed second in the mile with a time of 5:06.07

Francis Bernard and Danielle Blanco gathered second place finishes in the 3000-meter run and the 400-meter hurdles with times of 10:30.50 and 1:04.09 respectively.

On the men's side Justin Emerson took the 100-meter dash with a time of 10.81 seconds.

Brandon Bassett placed first in the men's high jump with a leap of 2.40m and Sidney Jordan placed second in the men's discus throw (48.31m)

Brandon Hazouri and Adams Jones took first and second place respectively in the 3000-meter event with times of 8:29.17 and 8:30.94.

Luke Weishaar took second in the men's mile run with a time of 4:22.14 and Jay Vines captured second place in the men's 400-meter hurdles with a time of 57.13 seconds.

 

UNCG Competes at UNCW Seahawk Invitational
GREENSBORO, N.C. – The UNCG men’s and women’s track and field program opened the 2014 outdoor season this weekend at the annual UNCW Seahawk Invitational held at the Greene Track & Field Complex in Wilmington. Both programs posted strong finishes in the 800-meter distances while the women’s team notched a pair of top three showings on the weekend.

Senior Tyron Alston highlighted three Spartans in the top six of the 800-meter race as he won the distance Saturday. Alston turned in a time of 1:55.72 in the finals to win the race while also posting a 1:53.00 in the preliminary heat, the fastest time of the day.


Sophomore Joshua Crawford placed fifth overall with a time of 1:56.88 while junior Brandon Cain finished sixth in a personal-record time of 1:58.94.

Senior Shaina Sumney was the Spartans’ top finisher on the women’s side, placing second in the 800-meter dash. Sumney turned in a personal-record time of 2:14.86 to finish only four 100ths of a second behind Savana Weller of North Dakota at 2:14.82.


Sophomore Katherine Link also turned in a personal-record time in the 800-meter race, clocking in at 2:20.99 to finish sixth overall. Sophomore Katlyn Ayers rounded out the Spartans in the top 15 as she placed 13th overall with a time of 2:26.71.

Senior Kelly Montague turned in a third place finish in the 1,500-meter race with a time of 4:52.28. Tereza Novonta of Elon won the event with a time of 4:24.44. Rounding out the top Spartans on the weekend was senior Shannon Hall who placed 10th overall in the 400-meter dash with a time of 59.22.

 

Elon Competes at UNC Wilmington Seahawk Invitational
WILMINGTON, N.C.  – The Elon University track and field team completed its 2014 outdoor debut on Saturday, March 15, on the final day at the UNC Wilmington Seahawk Invitational at the Greene Track and Field Complex. The Phoenix finished in second at the meet with 159 points, 20 points behind host UNCW.

Tereza Novotna and Kaitlin Snapp took the top two spots in the 1,500-meter run with times of 4:42.44 and 4:47.30, respectively.
 
Sydney Griffin won the 100-meters with a time of 14.23 while fellow sophomore Jennifer Esposito was fourth overall in the race with her time of 15.20.

Esposito did capture the title in the 400-meter hurdles with a time of 1:01.38, the second fastest performance in school history. Senior Veronica Luedke was fourth overall after finishing with a time of 1:03.88.

Megan Kirschling set a new school-record in the high jump, finishing second in the event with a cleared height of 1.75m. 

Sophomore Simone Jackson ran the second-fastest time in school history in the 100-meters with a time of 12.32 and was fifth overall in the race. Fellow sophomore Bria Turner just missed a top-10 finish with her time of 12.67.

In the 200-meters, senior Bria Bell was the top finisher for Elon in third overall after clocking in a time of 24.94 while Griffin was close behind in fourth with her time of 24.96.

Kimberly Johansen and Jackie Madden were the top two runners in the 800-meter race for Elon with times of 2:16.97 and 2:17.10 and were third and fourth, respectively.

The 4x400-meter relay team of Bell, Jennifer Pash, Luedke and Esposito was second overall in the race with a time of 3:52.51. 

In the throwing events, Charlise Morgan finished as the runner up in the shot put with a heave of 13.89-meters. Freshman Bréanna Warren threw the second-best mark in school history in the discus throw, finishing second with a toss of 44.30m.

Members of the Elon men's cross country team also competed today in some of the distance events. Luis Vargas set a new men's outdoor school-record in the 1,500-meters, winning the race with a time of 3:50.72. Adam Bernstein garnered a top-10 finish with a time of 4:08.00 while senior James Stevenson also competed with his time of 4:16.37, 14th overall.
