DAVIDSON, N.C. — Looking to move to 2-0 in the Southern Conference, Davidson was unable to hold off a hot Chattanooga Moc team as it fell 7-0 Wednesday afternoon in a mid-week women’s tennis match.
The Wildcats (6-10, 1-1 SoCon) were seeking their first 2-0 league start since 2008, but Chattanooga (10-2, 2-0 SoCon) pushed its win streak to six in a row by taking all three doubles positions and then all six singles spots for the victory.
Brites Moniz-Soares and Elaina Cummer pushed their match at No. 1 doubles to a tie-breaker, which went down to the wire, but came up short in an 8-6 decision.
In singles play, Cummer had the best showing, score wise, as she fell at No. 2 by the count of 6-3, 7-6. Her second-set tie-breaker was a back-and-forth affair before she fell 8-6.
Freshman Jenna Brunner saw her season and team-high five-match winning streak come to an end, as she was defeated 6-3, 6-1 at the No. 5 position to fall to 9-5 on the season.
North Carolina 6, Appalachian State 0
CHARLESTON, S.C. – An opposing stable of nationally-ranked singles players was too much to overcome as Appalachian State University women's tennis dropped a 6-0 decision to No. 6 North Carolina on Wednesday at the College of Charleston Tennis Complex.
The Mountaineers (4-9) dropped their third-straight match as they were unable to earn a single set win over the Tar Heels (14-3), who picked up their third-straight win after vaulting from No. 12 to No. 6 in the latest ITA Rankings, which were released on Tuesday.
Jessica Thaggard put up the best fight of the afternoon for the Apps as she was able to take her opponent to a tiebreaker in the first set, but ultimately fell by a 7-6 (7-4), 6-4 final at No. 5 singles.
Clare Cox and Mackenzie LaSure fell to two of the nation's top players at the No. 1 and No. 2 spots, respectively. Cox was downed 6-2, 6-0 by Jamie Loeb, who entered the week as the No. 1 singles player in the nation while LaSure, who faced No. 5 Hayley Carter, fell by a final of 6-2, 6-3.
Gabrielle Wreder fell in straight sets (6-1, 6-0) at No. 3 singles while Brianna Armellino saw her six-match win streak come to an end in a 6-4, 6-1 loss at the No. 4 spot. McKayla Zupan rounded out Appalachian's lineup with a 6-2, 6-1 loss at No. 6 singles.
No doubles matches were played as North Carolina had already won the match following the conclusion of No. 2 singles, which was the fourth match to finish.
The Mountaineers are off on Thursday but wrap up their week in Charleston against Southern Miss at 10 a.m. on Friday before heading to Southern Conference rival Georgia Southern on Sunday.
UC Irvine 4, Furman 3
IRVINE, Calif. – UC Irvine halted the Furman women’s tennis team’s four-match winning streak with a 4-3 decision over the Paladins Wednesday at the Anteater Tennis Stadium in Irvine, Calif.
The Anteaters clinched the doubles point to open the match, as Ali Facey and Franziska Goettschin topped junior Alex Moreno-Kaste and senior Katherine Oudin, 8-4, at flight one, and Kat Facey teamed with Sarah Stadfelt for an 8-6 win over junior Kelly Sullivan and freshman Karlee Bryde at number three. The Paladins were victorious at flight two, as freshmen Blair Martin and Ansley Speaks bested Sarah Gong and Brooke Schweyer, 8-6.
The teams split the singles matches, with Furman’s Speaks moving into the top spot in the lineup and registering a 1-6, 6-3, 10-5 win versus Gong. Moreno-Kaste notched a victory at flight two, defeating Marivick Mamiit, 4-6, 6-2, 10-7, and Paladin senior Amanda Murray beat Stadfelt, 7-6(5), 6-0, at flight six to add to the Furman total.
UC Irvine picked up wins at flights three through five for the team victory. Goettschin defeated Bryde, 6-1, 6-0, at number three, and Ali Facey recorded a 6-4, 6-1 advantage over Oudin at flight four. At flight five, Kat Facey posted a 6-1, 6-2 win versus Sullivan.
Furman (7-4) will conclude its California trip with a 1 p.m. match at San Diego on Friday.
