SPARTANBURG, S.C. – Elon junior Stefan Fortmann has been named the Southern Conference Men’s Tennis Player of the Week for all matches played March 3-9. Fortmann posted an unblemished mark of 4-0 in all competition last week as the Phoenix earned a pair of Southern Conference wins over Samford (7-0) and Davidson (6-1).

Competing at No. 4 singles, Fortmann posted two straight-set wins by identical scores. The Wartburg, South Africa, native topped Samford’s Trey Carter, 6-2, 6-2 before downing Davidson’s J.B. Gough by the same score. Fortmann has now won his last three singles matches and four of his last six contests.

Paired with Juan Madrid at No. 3 doubles, the Elon duo held off Samford’s Austin Akers and Fares Kilani, 8-5, before posting an 8-1 win over Davidson’s Alex Howard and Connor Evins. Fortmann and Madrid are now 3-1 together overall, including a 3-0 mark in league play.

Elon returns to action Wednesday Friday when the Phoenix visit Winthrop. Elon’s next Southern Conference match is scheduled for March 23 against The Citadel.

Other top performers in the Southern Conference included Davidson’s Connor Evins, Chattanooga’s Gino Devalle and Wofford’s Rob Galloway.
