GREENVILLE, S.C. – The Furman women’s tennis team clinched the doubles point and registered singles wins in five out of six matches to down Charlotte, 6-1, Saturday at the Mickel Tennis Center in Greenville, S.C.
In doubles play, the Paladins put toether wins in the bottom two spots to clinch the opening point. Freshmen Blair Martin and Ansley Speaks teamed up for a 6-2 win over Natsuko Takayanagi and Tyler Baker at number two, then senior Margaret Boyette and rookie Karlee Bryde handed Macy Vonderschmidt and Jessica Perez a 6-3 defeat at flight three. The flight one match was unfinished.
The Paladins swept the top three singles matches in straight sets, as junior Alex Moreno-Kaste beat Victoria Pahlett, 7-6, 6-1, in the top match-up, and Speaks recorded a 7-5, 6-1 victory versus Lisa Grosselius at number two. Oudin topped Takayanagi, 6-1, 6-4, in the number three contest.
The 49ers picked up their lone point of the day at flight four, where Baker held on for a 6-1, 4-6, 1-0(10-3) win against Martin. At flight five, Bryde bested Vonderschmidt, 6-2, 6-0, and junior Kelly Sullivan posted a win at number six, beating Perez, 7-6, 6-2.
Furman (2-2) continues its home stand Sunday, when the Paladins square off against UNC Wilmington at noon at the Mickel Tennis Center.
Elon 7, N.C. Central 0
ELON, N.C. – The Elon University women's tennis team picked up its first win of the season on Saturday, Feb. 8, following a 7-0 sweep of North Carolina Central.
Five of Elon's six singles wins were in straight sets following a sweep of all three doubles matches. Elon improves to 1-4 with the victory.
Elon started off strong, sweeping all three doubles matches to take an early 1-0 advantage on the Eagles. Jordan Johnson and Taylor Casey claimed an 8-4 win at No. 1, while Frida Jansaker and Maria Camara Ruiz topped Mia Ramic and Aissa Muamba at No. 2 with an 8-2 decision. Viviana Stavreva and Bryn Khoury sealed it at No. 3 with an 8-2 win.
Ruiz got Elon started on the right foot at No. 6 singles, topping Tamara Jeremic, 6-0, 6-0. Jansaker claimed a 6-2, 6-0, decision at No. 2 singles versus Wood, while Casey was victorious at No. 4 against Ramic, 6-3, 6-0.
At No. 1 singles, Johnston claimed a 6-3, 6-2, decision against Muamba while Khoury topped Ekaterina Nekrasova, 6-1, 6-1.
Rookie Tolley Rice picked up an impressive win for the maroon and gold at No. 5, winning in three sets (6-1, 4-6, 10-8) against Lynsey Cover.
Elon returns to action on Feb. 12 at the Jimmy Powell Tennis Center versus Campbell.
Chattanooga 4, Murray State 2
MEMPHIS, Tenn. - The University of Tennessee at Chattanooga women’s tennis team rebounded from its first loss of the season on Friday with a nice 4-2 win over Murray State this afternoon. Chattanooga dropped the doubles point, but fought back with four wins in singles action to improve to 4-1.
UTC only lost the doubles point five times all of last season, and only once in those matches did the Mocs come back to win the dual. Chattanooga was in quick hole when Andrea Eskauriatza and Erin Patton defeated senior Alexa Flynn and sophomore Kelsey Coots 6-0 at No. 2.
Junior Kaylene Chadwell and sophomore Kayla Jones were locked in a 5-5 match at No. 1 with Eleonore and Verginie Tchakarova, but Murray State won at No. 3 to take the point. Megan Blue and Carla Suga pulled that one out 6-4 over sophomore Claire Mulyadi and freshman Rachele Gazzola.
With just four courts available at the Memphis University School, and No. 5 and No. 6 not competing in yesterday’s 4-0 loss to No. 33 Memphis, singles play started with 1, 2, 5 and 6.
Chadwell tied the team score at 1-1 with a dominating (6-0, 6-0) win over Suga at No. 2. Murray State went back up 2-1 when Eskauriatza downed Jones (6-3, 6-4) at No. 1.
The Mocs went on to win the next three matches to grab the team victory. Flynn clinched the match with a three-set win over Eleonore Tchakarova (6-1, 4-6, 1-0 (10-6)) at No. 3.
Georgia Southern 7, Alabama A&M 0
MONTGOMERY, Al. - Georgia Southern women's tennis conquered Alabama State 7-0 this afternoon at the Olean Black Underwood Tennis Center.
"I am proud of the way the team competed today," said head coach Amy Bonner. "I hope we can carry the momentum of the last two days with us into the match tomorrow with Auburn. That will be a great experience for the team and we are looking forward to it."
In doubles play, Paola Garrido and Mary Phillips Smith were down 4-1, then down again 6-2. The team fought back and won 8-6. Stephanie Woods and Giulia Riepe defeated Alabama State's Denis and Telfer 8-3. Caitlin Kitchen and Jordana Klein were victorious 8-3, securing the doubles point for the Eagles.
Garrido tallied a win for the Eagles in singles play, beating ASU's Wijugaarde 6-0, 6-1. Klein and Daria Vasekina beat their opponents, as well as Stephanie Woods and Riepe.
The Eagles next competition is Sunday, February 9th, against Auburn University.
